Melissa Mendelson has had a long fascination with the world of dog sled racing, and this year she’s learning about the sport from a world champion. Osage resident Ed Streeper and his wife Amy welcomed the Ohio resident to their home to assist in training dogs and providing rides. The season has officially opened and there is enough snow on the ground for traditional sled dog rides.

The Frazee City Council agreed to support the addition of a path to the State Highway 87 project. Prior to making the decision, the Frazee City Council listened to residents speak during the public forum on Monday, Dec. 10 at the regular monthly meeting. The residents stated they had attended the public forum hosted by the Minnesota Department of Transportation on Tuesday, Dec. 4. At the meeting the preliminary plans for the State Highway 87 project were discussed.

The City of Frazee taxes are set to increase by about 15 percent in 2019. Frazee City Administrator Denise Anderson presented the budget to the council at its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Dec. 10. She explained a large part of the increase to the budget is to deal with potential issues regarding work done in the southwest part of town along West Maple Avenue.

In spite of icy roads, Frazee’s little turkey came back to Frazee last week, and was accompanied by an even littler turkey. Frazee’s downtown mascot, the little turkey statue, returned from a leave of absence during which he was reconditioned by fiberglass craftsman Dave Oswald in Sparta, Wisc. “He (the turkey) was really redone,” said Kenny Fett of the Frazee Community Club New Turkey Committee. “He got new wings, new tail feathers, a new head and new legs and feet.” The delivery was made by Oswald, by way of North Dakota where he mad another delivery. Oswald brought with him a small scale-model turkey which he had used to determine proportions when he created the big turkey, which roosts at Lions Park on the edge of Frazee. He presented the scale-model turkey to the city of Frazee.

Gaylene Smith opened a travel agency in her home in Frazee Monday of last week. By Wednesday, she had arranged trips to China and Alaska, in addition to other locations. And this—December—is the slow season in the travel business. Busy season comes in January and February. “I’ve sold tickets to every part of the world,” she said. She hasn’t quite done that yet during the week-and-a-half she’s been working in Frazee, but she has sold tickets to everywhere during her 12-year career as a travel agent.
