Sometimes one only needs time on their hands to discover a talent. Such was the case for Eleanor Jane of Osage. The established author began penning her first novel in 2010, after she found herself unemployed. “When I wasn’t looking for work, I was bored,” Jane recalled. “I’m not sure what inspired me to start, but I remember opening my computer and just writing about 10 pages. Then, all of a sudden, it was as if God opened a window and I had all these ideas come to me out of the blue.” When her husband, Jim, noticed his wife was keeping herself busy in the den, he pried. “I had not told anyone that I was writing a book,” she said. “When I did tell him, he was astounded. Every time I got up from the computer he’d sit down and read.”

Take a turn down any road around the Vergas area and you are sure to eventually find a lake or a farm field within view. On the east side of Loon Lake there is a farmhouse overlooking the lake where some homestyle lefse is being prepared. Since the early 1980s Vergas resident Phyllis Rick has been making batches of lefse.

The Vergas City Council discussed proceeding with its wellhead protection plan at a special meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 11. A representative of Minnesota Rural Water reviewed the wellhead protection plan with the council. He noted the city well is one of the deepest in the area at about 340-to-350 feet. Open wells in the city were identified. It was stated that about 100 were recorded. The objective is to educate well owners on how to maintain them, and offer an opportunity to seal them, free of charge.

The official race sign for the Third Crossing Sled Dog Rendezvous set Jan. 2 near Frazee was received at Friday’s sled dog meeting. A little more snow would make the trail perfect for the race.

Students at Frazee have come together during the past few days to help each other and encourage the family of sisters Melody and Selah Jensen. Students have made cards, banners and have sent flowers for the two girls who were involved in a serious auto/bus accident last Thursday. Melody, 18, and Selah, 16, are the daughters of Steve and Tamie Jensen of rural Detroit Lakes. Melody, a senior, was released from St. Mary’s Regional Health Care Center Sunday and Selah, a sophomore, continues her recovery at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Melody suffered from a bruised kidney and bruised lungs. Selah’s condition has improved slightly since the accident. She is in critical but stable in condition.

Ask Bonnie Riewer what her career is, and the short answer would be “chocolate.” Riewer is Frazee’s chocolate lady. She makes all types of chocolate decorations for Christmas, Easter, the Fourth of July, Halloween, birthday parties or “whatever.” She makes chocolate angels, chocolate teddy bears, chocolate hearts and just about anything else can be made from chocolate. (She’s got 100 molds.).

By a 4-1 vote, the Becker County Board of Commissioners approved joining the Lake Agassiz Regional Library last Wednesday. The dissenting vote was cast by Commissioner Gordon Sanders of Frazee. By joining the Lake Agassiz Regional Library, all Becker County residents will have the free use of the Detroit Lakes Library, and it is expected that a bookmobile will make regular routes throughout the county.
