Krystl Harstad is starting the new year with a thank you. In the wake of the devastating loss of her husband, Jeremy, the rural Detroit Lakes woman and their six children (Janet, 14, Korissa, 13, Jared, 11, Irene, 9, Dayton, 4, and Katyrene, 8) found immeasurable support from family, friends and many generous businesses. Most recently, Harstad was nominated to win a new living room furniture set from Karvonen’s Furniture in Perham.
Slick roads or darting deer may result in a fender bender. If the need arises, Rochert resident Mike Hedlund is hoping to make the repair process easy. The 1989 Frazee High School graduate recently opened Precision Collision Repair in Detroit Lakes with his business partner David Perry. In addition to the body work, the team also repairs and replaces damaged windshields, and will work with all insurance companies. While some repair companies may shy away from foreign vehicles, Precision Collision Repair welcomes them.

Eddy Streeper, Osage, put another jewel in the crown of his 25-year career at the Third Crossing Rendezvous Saturday, Jan. 2 near Frazee with a win in the open class with a 16-dog team. Streeper averaged 19.5 miles per hour around the 10+ mile course to claim the title against 13 other open mushers with a time of 33:44.97 to win $500. Following close behind Streeper was Dave Hochman of Canowne, Manitoba with 34:24.40. Hochman has yet to beat Streeper, but says he’s gaining on the musher and feels confident he’ll come out on top soon, especially with the season just getting under way. There were 14 racers in the open, which is the only race of its type held in Minnesota. In the open, an unlimited number of dogs are allowed. Streeper’s brother Terry holds the honor of racing the most dogs with 28. There are only three other open sled dog racing events in the Lower 48. Out of the 80 locations Streeper has raced at in his 25-year career, he has won in 65 of those places. His goal is to win as many races at as many different locations as possible.
A meeting aimed at the formation of a Girl Scout troop in Frazee is set for 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday) in the Frazee-Vergas Elementary School cafeteria. All girls ages 5-17 and their parents/guardians are invited. Girl Scout representative Gretchen Bromley will talk about how the program relates to the needs and interests of individual girls.
Pam Graham, deputy city clerk and liquor store bookkeeper, was terminated by her supervisor at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, according to Graham. That marked her last day of work. Graham has worked since May 1996 in those positions, she said. Mayor Vikesland and Clerk Teri Osterman declined to comment on the situation. He noted department heads have the authority to terminate their employees. In this case, Osterman is the department head.

Minnesota moose hunters bagged 460 of the state’s largest big game animals during the 1973 season, the Department of Natural Resources reports. The split season was held from September 22 to October 7 and from December 8 to 16. Permits were issued on a drawing basis to 520 hunting parties of four persons each. In the previous season, held in 1971, 374 moose were taken by 400 parties. Like the 1971 season most of the moose taken this year were bulls – comprising 69 percent of the total bag. Cows made up 23 percent with the balance calves and yearlings. Roger Holmes, DNR Game Supervisor, said he knew of four racks being entered in the Crockett and Boone competition, with the biggest one – a 62 inch spread and preliminary score of 196 points – having a good chance of placing. Hunters will have to await passage of new legislation before they can hunt moose again, Holmes said.
