Hornets snap skid at Warroad

The Frazee Hornets snapped a five game losing streak and improved to 3-5 overall with a 66-60 win over Warroad on Saturday. The game was part of a pair of boys-girls doubleheaders against Roseau on Friday night and Warroad on Saturday.
This week the Hornets will take on Pelican Rapids on Tuesday night, before hosting Staples-Motley in a non-conference game on Thursday.
December 21
After leading for much of the first half, a late first half run by Barnesville left the Frazee Hornets on the wrong side of a 34-31 halftime score on December 21. Barnesville continued to find its shot in the second half as the Trojans shot just under 53 percent from the field on their way to a 71-57 win over the Hornets.
Frazee shot 38.6 percent from the field, but turned the ball over 20 times and was outscored in the paint by a 36-24 margin.
Carter Sonnenberg led the way offensively for the Hornets as he finished with a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He also had 4 assists in the loss.
Adam Vigen also scored 16 points and finished with 3 assists. Alex Helmers and Asher Blaine narrowly missed joining the pair in double figures as they finished with 8 points apiece.

Frazee and Wadena-Deer Creek traded the lead for much of the first half on December 28, before a late run by the Wolverines pushed them in front of the Hornets by a score of 44-39 at halftime. Unfortunately, the Hornets were unable to match WDC’s offensive output in the second half as the Hornets fell by a score of 83-65 in non-conference action on December 28. The Hornets and Wolverines both shot over 45 percent from the field, the big difference came in made 3-pointers and at the free throw line.
The Wolverines went 11-25 from behind the 3-point line, while also going 11-13 from the free throw line. By comparison, the Hornets went 6-18 from the 3-point line and just 1-2 from the free throw line.
The Hornets also were able to control the paint as they held a 40-34 advantage down low and turned the ball over just 14 times in the game.
Four Hornets reached double figures on December 28 with Asher Blaine going 7-13 from the field to finish with 16 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Adam Vigen scored 15 points, while Alex Helmers went 3-7 from behind the 3-point line to score 13 points in the loss.
Carter Sonnenberg recorded his second straight double-double as he scored 11 points to go along with 13 rebounds.

Just as they had in their two previous games, the Frazee Hornets held a lead for much of the first half as they were able to keep Battle Lake at bay in non-conference action on December 29. Frazee was able to hold a slim 26-25 lead at the halftime break, before the Battlers were ultimately able to overtake the Hornets by a score of 53-44. The Hornets scored just 18 points in the second half and shot just 24 percent from the field in the loss.
Despite turning the ball over just 10 times in the loss
and pulling down an impressive 23 offensive rebounds, the Hornets found themselves in foul trouble throughout the second half, which led to another big disparity at the free throw line for Frazee. The Hornets went 4-7 from the free throw line, while the Battlers went 14-21 from the charity stripe.
Adam Vigen led the way offensively with 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Asher Blaine also reached double figures with 14 points.

Friday
Frazee made its way to the Canadian border over the weekend as the Hornets traveled to Roseau on Friday, before hitting the road to go to Warroad on Saturday.
On Friday night the Hornets found themselves down early and were unable to get their shots to fall in the first half of the game. Frazee trailed by a score of 50-29 to the Rams, before holding the Rams to just 24 second half points, but ultimately fell by a score of 74-52.
Frazee overcame foul trouble throughout the night as they had 22 team fouls, but forced 26 Roseau turnovers. The Hornets shot just 27 percent from the field, but knocked down seven 3-pointers in the loss. The biggest difference in the game came in the paint as Roseau held a commanding 44-22 advantage down low and out rebounded the Hornets by a 60-32 margin.
The Hornets were led offensively by Alex Helmers who scored 19 points on just 7-14 shooting. He hit a team-high four 3-point shots.
Asher Blaine scored 8 points to go along with 5 rebounds, while Carter Sonnenberg finished with 7 points.

Frazee snapped a five game losing streak on Saturday as the Hornets secured a 66-60 overtime win over Warroad.
The Hornets led 29-27 at halftime and led for much of the second half until the Warriors went on a late run to take the lead late in the second half. Fortunately, the Hornets were able to tie the game late in the half and force an overtime. Frazee scored early and took the lead from the get-go in the extra frame as they outscored the Warriors 11-5 in overtime to come away with their third win of the season.
As a team the Hornets shot 36.5 percent from the field and made the most of their trips to the free throw line as they went 14-25 from the charity stripe, compared to 8-12 for the Warriors.
The Hornets also forced 21 Warrior turnovers that led to 16 points on the offensive end of the court.
Asher Blaine had a big game for the Hornets as he went 10-17 from the field to finish with a game-high 27 points. He also secured 13 rebounds to finish the game with a double-double.
Adam Vigen scored 14 points to go along with 5 rebounds, while Carter Sonnenberg finished with a double-double of his own as he scored 12 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
