Frazee takes sixth a Rick Lee Invite

The eighth ranked Frazee Hornets wrapped up one of their busiest weeks of the season with a 2-4 record at the Rick Lee Invitational in Bemidji over the weekend. The Hornets finished in sixth place at the tournament, which came on the heels of a 51-10 win over Badger-Greenbush-Middle River on Tuesday night. 

Frazee is currently 13-7 overall in duals as they look to rebound this week with a triangular in New York Mills on Thursday night and the HOL Conference tournament in Barnesville on Friday. 

Tuesday

An Ashton Reller pin in just 39 seconds at 107 lbs. set the tone for a dominating 51-10 win over Badger-Greenbush-Middle River on Tuesday night.

The Hornets never trailed in the match and won nine of 10 matches from 121 lbs. to 215 lbs. to take a 60-7 lead over the Gators. That stretch included pins by Liam Hamm at 127 lbs., Josh Mellema at 139 lbs., Bailey Peichel at 145 lbs., Preston Mayfield at 172 lbs., Jack Graham at 189 lbs. and Tanner Moe at 215 lbs. 

In addition to the seventh pins, the Hornets secured three wins by forfeit by Gabe Schemerhorn, Tyler Moe and Cade Nagel.

Saturday

The Frazee Hornets went 2-4 to finish in sixth place at the Rick Lee Invitational in Bemidji over the weekend. 

The Hornets opened the tournament with an impressive 27-25 win over Bemidji. The Hornets trailed early in the match by winning just one of the opening six matches of the night, a Liam Hamm major decision at 121 lbs., before dominating the middle to upper weights to blow past the Lumberjacks. 

Bailey Peichel made the score 22-7 in favor of Bemidji when he secured a 7-1 decision over Lincoln Schmitt at 145 lbs., before Tyler Moe won by a major decision at 152 lbs. to add another 4 team points to the score. 

Following a close 5-4 decision for Alec Newby of Bemidji at 160 lbs., Preston Mayfield secured an important pin at 172 lbs. to bright the Hornets back within striking distance. 

Jack Graham pulled the Hornets to within one point when he secured a major decision at 189 lbs. to make the score 22-21 in favor of Bemidji, before Derek Zitzow gave Frazee its first lead of the day when he pinned Kohen Donat at the 3:38 mark of his 215 lbs. bout to give Frazee a 27-22 lead. 

Xander Kohler dropped his heavyweight bout by a 4-0 decision, but secured the team win for the Hornets as he did not get pinned or lose by a tech fall to end the score 27-25 in favor of the Hornets.

Frazee dropped each of its next two matches against a familiar opponent in United North Central by a score of 40-30, as well as to Holdingford by a score of 38-15. 

In their fourth match of the day, Zitzow broke a 24-24 tie with Brainerd in the final bout of the match to come away with a 9-3 decision at heavyweight to give the Hornets a 27-24 win over the Warriors.

The Hornets dropped their final two duals of the tournament by a 38-18 score to Staples-Motley and 31-28 to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton to finish in sixth place.
