Conservation practices are increasing across Minnesota to protect the land and waters, and those leading the efforts on their land were recognized recently at the state level.
In December, Valhalla Resort was honored as outstanding conservationists at the annual meeting of the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD). They were selected by the Becker Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) for the award.
MASWCD hosted its convention December 11-13, 2023, in Bloomington, Minn.
Each year, the state’s SWCDs recognize individuals and organizations for outstanding accomplishments in implementing conservation practices and improving Minnesota’s natural resources. The award program is done with support from The Farmer magazine.
Valhalla Resort was recognized for a variety of conservation practices, said Brian Malone. Some of those practices or achievements include: installing coir log (coconut husk and hemp rope), having fresh topsoil installed in areas with erosion to create a gradual slope to the shoreline.
The restoration has helped prevent the rising water level from hitting the grass and causing further erosion.
“We’re really proud of Valhalla Resort and what the organization has done for conservation in Becker County,” said Malone. “Valhalla Resort provides a wonderful example for conservationists by helping make sure the lake is in good shape for the visitors that come year after year.”
Valhalla Resort is located on Island Lake 20 miles northeast of Frazee.
