For the first time in many years, farmers are free to produce as much as they can. With the elimination of production controls on grains and cultivated crops during the coming year, farmers are expected to put more of their land into crops and to farm present cropland intensively to increase yields. It is estimated in Becker Co. that 25,000 acres of land now in grass, trees or other non crop uses has been – or soon will be – converted to cropland for the 1974 growing season. Approximately 80 per cent of this was in the former “set-aside land”.
