King sentenced to five years on gun felony

Allen Ronald King of Frazee was sentenced for the crime of felon in possession of a firearm, a felony.
A separate felony charge of receiving stolen property was dropped in a plea agreement.
According to Becker County District Court records, law enforcement received a report of a man with a gun in the parking lot of Jimmy John’s in Detroit Lakes on Aug. 9, 2023.
Multiple officers responded and were advised by dispatch of the identifying characteristics of King, 22, and that he was last seen running by Dairy Queen.
King was quickly detained by a Becker County deputy.
Later, a Detroit Lakes police officer was contacted by an employee at Masterpiece Alternatives, who said that he had the firearm King had been wielding and that it came into the employee’s possession after a struggle with King. Police took possession of the Sig Sauer P365, 9-millimeter pistol and 10 rounds of ammunition.
King’s identification card, a debit card belonging to another individual, a cell phone, and a red bandana were also confiscated.
The employee said that King was seen on camera trying to shoplift “vape” bars from Masterpiece Alternatives. King was later found to be in possession of the stolen item and removed it from his pocket. In the process, the employee saw the pistol in King’s front pocket.
King claimed the weapon was a BB gun, but the employee stated when King pulled the pistol out the employee recognized that it was a 9-millimeter.
Two employees tried to restrain King until police arrived, but he escaped
Video of the incident was turned over to law enforcement.
The 9-millimeter was later reported stolen from a vehicle that was being worked on at an auto repair shop in Detroit Lakes.
Police also talked to a woman who said King had earlier brought a handgun to her home and told her he was trying to sell it.
King is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition after a previous conviction of threats of violence in 2021.
Becker County District Judge Michael Fritz sentenced King on Tuesday, Jan. 2, to 60 months in state prison at St. Cloud, with credit for 147 days served. King was fined $50 plus $150 in court fees.
