Curious goat inspires children’s book—As Georgia Nagel made her rounds caring for family pets, she was struck with inspiration. “One of my many clients has a goat named Maurice,” the rural Frazee resident said. “He got into a delivery truck and that started my imagination.” A story developed in her mind—a goat lived on a farm and was surrounded by other animals, but was the only one of his species. Then came the adventure of the goat sneaking onto a delivery truck to find other goats. Nagel said the moral of the story is that Maurice learns he left his family behind, even though they may look different.
Annika Kovar created a nationwide program that brings the skill of gardening to preschools. For her efforts, the rural Frazee resident earned a $1,000 scholarship and silver medallion as a state winner of the nationwide scholarship. The Perham High School senior was also invited to Washington D.C. in early May. There, she will be in the running to be named as a Top 10 honoree. Those students receive an additional $5,000 scholarship along with a gold medallion.

About 30,000 one-day-old turkey poults died of smoke inhalation Feb. 3 as the result of the first-ever fire in a turkey barn at Sonset Farms commercial farm, northwest of Frazee, on Frazee Road. The fire was primarily confined to wood chips on the floor, according to co-owner Wayne Mickelson. Although some insulation inside the walls caught fire, there was no structural damage to the 25-year-old 60×300 building, he said. Mickelson said no probably cause has been identified, but possibilities include sparks from an open flame brooding flame. The fire apparently started between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., according to Mickelson. He said farm manager Tony Beck left the building at 11:30 p.m. to go to lunch, and when he came back an hour later, flames were coming out of the door.
Kathy Weidemann said it was her goal to become a sheriff’s deputy by the time she turned 25. She made it, with a little over a year to spare. She was sworn in as a Becker County deputy Feb. 1, five days before her 24th birthday. “It’s a good birthday present for me,” she said. “It’s my career goal.” Weidemann, of Frazee, has become the first full-time female deputy with the Becker County Sheriff’s Department. (In the early ‘80s, Ida Engel served as a deputy with the department, but she was part-time.)

The Mrs. Jaycees of Frazee will be collecting newspapers and magazines on Saturday, March 30th with the collecting starting at 12 noon. The area within the city limits will be covered. Those wishing to have newspapers and magazines picked up should place them in flat bundles of about 30 papers or 15 magazines that are tied with twine or cord and placed on the curb. Those outside the collection area are urged to bring them to the former Creamery building. Those unable to place bundles on curb leave porch light on and they will be carried from your house by collectors. They are selling the papers to be recycled for insulation. The money will be used for community projects.
