Hornets receive second seed in tournament

The Frazee Hornets ended their regular season in dramatic fashion last week with a pair of wins against both Detroit Lakes and Perham. The Hornets defeated the Lakers by a score of 63-0, before securing a 29-25 win over Perham when Derek Zitzow secured a pin at heavyweight to give Frazee the win.

The pair of wins end Frazee’s regular season with a record of 18-7 overall as they now turn their attention to the section tournament, which kicks off Tuesday night in Frazee. 

The Hornets received the second seed in the tournament and will host seventh seeded Badger-Greenbush-Middle River on Tuesday night in Frazee. The winner of the match will take on either third seeded Fosston/Bagley or sixth seeded Fertile-Beltrami on Friday at Fertile-Beltrami High School at 6 p.m. in the Section 8A semi-finals. 

The finals will be held following the conclusion of the semi-finals matches on Friday night. 

On the other side of the bracket, top seeded United North Central will host eighth seeded Crookston on Tuesday night, while fourth seeded Barnesville will host fifth seeded Mahnomen/Waubun in the opening round of the tournament. 

Feb. 1

Frazee won five straight matches and seven of the 13 matches overall on their way to a 36-27 win over Fosston-Bagley on Thursday, Feb. 1. 

After Fosston-Bagley jumped out to a 21-9 lead after the 145 lbs. match, the Hornets went on a tremendous run of five straight wins to pull in front for good in an important Section 8A contest. 

Tyler Moe got the winning streak going when he secured a win by forfeit, before Cade Nagel won by a fall at 160 lbs. Preston Mayfield followed with a pin at 172 lbs., before Jack Graham won by a 6-2 decision at 189 lbs. and Tanner Moe won by a fall at 215 lbs. to secure the win for the Hornets.

Feb. 8

The stands were filled as the Hornets hosted a pair of Highway 10 rivals on both sides of Frazee on Thursday night. Frazee swept a triangular against Detroit Lakes and Perham, and in the process, wrapped up its regular season on a high note with a pair of thrilling wins. 

The Hornets kicked off the night with a commanding 63-0 win over Detroit Lakes. The Hornets won eight of the 13 matches by fall or forfeit as they blanked the Lakers on the scoreboard.

In a thrilling match that came down to the heavyweight bout, the Hornets completed a perfect night on the mat with a 29-25 come-from-behind win over Perham. 

The Hornets trailed 19-14 heading into Preston Mayfield’s 172 lbs. match against Logan Guck. Mayfield secured a pin at the 4:44 mark of the match and Jack Graham followed with an impressive 4-2 decision at 189 lbs. to put the Hornets in front by a score of 23-19 heading into the final two matches of the night. 

Following a Hudson Hackel pin for Perham at 215 lbs., the entire dual came down tot he heavyweight match with Perham leading 25-23. 

Derek Zitzow came through in a big way at heavyweight as he secured a pin over Cash Burke at the 3:14 mark of the match to give the Hornets their 18th win of the season by a score of 29-25.
