Frazee wraps up team season with runner up finish

The Frazee Hornets came up just short of its bid of returning to its first state tournament since 2018 on Friday night as the wrestlers fell to United North Central in the section finals for the third straight year. This season the Hornets fell by a score of 27-23 to end their season with a record of 20-8 overall. 

The loss comes on the heels of a pair of tremendous wins in the quarterfinals and semi-finals where the Hornets defeated Badger/Greenbush-Middle River by a score of 63-10 and Fosston-Bagley by a score of 35-21.

On Saturday the Hornets will compete in the Section 8A individual tournament in Crookston. The top two place finishers in each weight bracket will advance to the state wrestling tournament next week at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. 

Tuesday

In the final home match for the senior wrestlers, the second seeded Frazee Hornets left little doubt of the outcome in Tuesday night’s quarterfinal match up against seventh seeded Badger/Greenbush-Middle River as they came away with a 63-10 win.

The Hornets won 11 of the 13 matches on the night and took advantage of three open weights to secure the lopsided win.

Securing pins for the Hornets were Ashton Reller, Cash Osterman, Josh Mellema, Bailey Peichel, Preston Mayfield, Jack Graham and Tanner Moe.

Friday

Frazee won five straight matches from 152 lbs. to 215 lbs. as the Hornets blew past Fosston-Bagley to advance to their third straight Section 8A championship match on Friday night.

Ashton Reller and Gabe Schermerhorn set the tone of the match for Frazee as Reller won an exciting 11-10 decision at 107 lbs., before Schermerhorn followed with a pin at 114 lbs. to give Frazee a 9-0 lead. 

Fosston-Bagley followed with a 5-2 decision at 121 lbs., before Cash Osterman put the Hornets up 12-3 when he won a tough 2-0 decision at 127 lbs. 

That set up a Fosston-Bagley run where they secured wins in three straight matches to take an 18-12 lead heading into Tyler Moe’s 152 lbs. match up for the Hornets. Moe won a major decision by a score of 15-2, which was the first of five straight Hornet wins as they dashed past Fosston-Bagley by a score of 35-21. Also securing wins for Frazee was Cade Nagel by an 8-0 major decision, Preston Mayfield by a pin, Jack Graham by an 8-2 decision and Tanner Moe by a pin.

The win set up a rematch of the last three Section 8A finals between Frazee and United North Central. 

In a match that came down to the wire, UNC won every close match and did just enough to upend the Hornets for the third straight year by a score of 27-23.

After losing three of the four opening matches of the bout, with Liam Hamm securing an 8-3 decision at 121 lbs., Frazee went on a run by winning five of the next six matches to take a 23-15 lead heading into the final three matches of the night. The lone exception came at 160 lbs. when Cade Nagel came out on the short end of a 6-5 decision. 

Following a 5-1 decision for UNC at 189 lbs., Ryan Peterson of UNC was able to get by Tanner Moe of Frazee by a 4-2 decision at 215 lbs., when he secured a take down late in overtime to make the score 23-21 in favor of UNC. Unfortunately, UNC secured a pin in 57 seconds to end Frazee’s hope at a return to the state team tournament by a score of 27-23. 

Also securing wins for the Hornets were Blake Sonnenberg, Josh Mellema, Bailey Peichel, Tyler Moe and Preston Mayfield.
