Hornets finish regular season with 12-12 record

The Frazee Hornets wrapped up one of their best regular seasons in a number of years with a pair of non-conference games against Wadena-Deer Creek and New York Mills. The Hornets edged Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 53-52 to ensure a seventh seed in the Section 8AA tournament, before falling the NY Mills on Friday night by a score of 42-39.

This week the Hornets, who finished the regular season with a record of 12-12 overall, will host 10th seeded Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Thursday night in Frazee. The teams have split their previous two games this season as the Rebels defeated the Hornets by a score of 70-49 in January, before Frazee defeated DGF 73-41 less-than two weeks ago.

The winner of Thursday’s game will take on second seeded Pelican Rapids on Saturday night at 7 p.m. From there the tournament will move to Concordia College where the semi-finals will be held on Tuesday, March 6. 

Tuesday

Jayden Sonnenberg hit a pair of free throws with just seconds remaining in the game to give the Frazee Hornets a 53-52 win over the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines on Tuesday night. The win was not only important as it gave Frazee its 12th win of the season, but also cemented one of its best seeds in the Section 8AA tournament in a number of years. With the win the Hornets secured the seventh seed in the section tournament and will host a game in the first round of the tournament, which kicks off Thursday night. 

Sonnenberg had a big night from the floor as she recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Brynn Larson also reached double figures with 11 points and 6 rebounds, while Katie Courneya scored 8 points, Ashley Malikowski scored 5 points, Hailey Selly scored 4 points and Analise Olson chipped in with 3 points.

Friday

Frazee wrapped up its regular season with a tough 42-39 loss to New York Mills on Friday night. The Hornets had a bit of an off night from the floor, which kept the visiting Eagles in the game throughout the contest. Unfortunately, NY Mills was able to do just enough down the stretch to come away with the non-conference win and hand the Hornets their 12th loss of the season.

Jayden Sonnenberg once again recorded a double-double as she scored 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while Riyan Eckert scored 6 points, Ashley Malikowski scored 4 points, Katie Courneya and Hailey Selly each scored 3 points and Brynn Larson and Analise Olson rounded out the scoring with 2 points apiece.
