There will be plenty to cheer about for the Frazee Hornet wrestling faithful when the state wrestling tournament kicks off this week at the Xcel Energy Center. In fact, it will take two hands to count all of the Hornets who advanced to the individual state wrestling tournament.

Jack Graham placed second at 189 lbs. in the Section 8A wrestling tournament on Saturday.

A total of six Hornets will be making the trek to St. Paul when the state individual tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. on Friday morning.

Bailey Peichel at 145 lbs. and Tyler Moe at 152 lbs. captured individual titles at the Section 8A meet on Saturday, while Liam Hamm, Cade Nagel, Preston Mayfield and Jack Graham all took second place.

Peichel, who is ranked fifth in the state and has a record of 26-5 overall, came into the section tournament as the second seed. Fourth ranked Aiden Wolfe of Fosston-Bagley, who has a record of 35-3 overall, was the top seed in a section final that could have just as easily been for a state championship, let alone the Section 8A finals.

Tanner Moe placed third at the section tournament on Saturday in Crookston.

Wolfe earned an early escape in the second period to take a 1-0 lead heading into the third period. Peichel quickly tied the match up at 1-1 when he chose the down position and earned an escape. Peichel broke the tie with a takedown with just 34 seconds remaining in the match. Wolfe earned an escape with 13 seconds remaining in the match, but it wasn’t enough as Peichel earned a thrilling 3-2 decision to come away with the win.

Not to be outdone, Moe took first place at 152 lbs. when he outscored Zach Davidson of United North Central 4-2 in the final period to come away with a 7-4 decision. The match was actually tied when Davidson secured a takedown with 1:04 remaining in the match, but Moe quickly earned an escape and eventually a takedown as time was expiring to come away with the win and section championship.

Liam Hamm took second place at 121 lbs. when he narrowly fell to sixth ranked Ian Phrakonkham of Fosston/Bagley by a 4-2 decision to finish as the runner up and punch his ticket to the state tournament. Hamm, who is just a freshman, improved to 30-14 on the season after going 1-1 in the section tournament.

Cade Nagel punched his ticket to state with a second place finish at 160 lbs. The junior was able to get by Riley Livingston of United North Central in the semi-finals by a 2-0 overtime decision. After a scoreless three periods, Nagel earned a takedown in overtime with 22 seconds remaining in the extra period to come away with the win.

In the finals, Nagel fell to seventh ranked at 172 lbs. Cameron Halverson of Barnesville by an 8-2 decision to make a return to state as runner up.

In another match up against a pair of top 10 ranked wrestlers, fifth ranked Preston Mayfield fell to sixth ranked Carter Coauette of Crookston by a 7-3 decision in the finals, before making quick work of Isaac Olson of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River in the true second match to punch his ticket to the state tournament.

Jack Graham will also be making his way to St. Paul after the sophomore pulled off an upset of ninth ranked Blake McMullen of Mahnomen/Waubun in the semi-finals of the 189 lbs. bracket by a 3-1 decision. Graham trailed 1-0 heading into the third period when he chose the down position and earned a quick escape to tie the match up at 1-1. Less than a minute later he earned a takedown and rode McMullen the rest of the way to secure a 3-1 decision.

In the finals, Graham fell to Eli Roiko of United North Central by fall at the 3:59 mark of the match to finish in second place.

In addition to the state tournament berths, several Hornets achieved career milestones on Saturday. Hamm, Graham and Cash Osterman secured their 50th wins and Moe secured his 150th win.

At 145 lbs., fifth ranked Peichel will take on Kenny Erickson of Aitkin. Erickson has a record of 18-4 overall. The winner of the match will take on either Joseph Cummings of St. Agnes, who has a record of 26-14 or fourth ranked Wolfe of Fosston/Bagley who has a record of 35-3 overall.
