The Frazee Hornets came just seconds away from knocking off second seeded and seventh ranked Pelican Rapids in the second round of the Section 8AA tournament on March 8. The Hornets were leading late in the second overtime, before Pelican Rapids hit a 3-pointer as time expired to tie the game and send the quarterfinal match up into a third overtime.

Freshman guard Katie Courneya looks to pass the ball into the block during the No. 7 Frazee Hornets’ Section 8AA quarterfinal game against the No. 2 Vikings in Pelican Rapids Saturday, March 2.

Unfortunately, the Vikings were able to capitalize on their momentum from hitting the last second shot and outscored the Hornets by 9 points in the third overtime to come away with a 71-62 win. The loss ended Frazee’s season with a record of 13-13 overall.

Sophomore Jayden Sonnenberg led Frazee with a double-double of team-highs, 19 points and 14 rebounds, in the season-ending loss to Pelican Rapids.

The Hornets came out of the gates hard and took a nice lead just minutes into the game. Unfortunately, DGF was able to crawl back into the game and tied the score at halftime.

The second half started much like the first half with Frazee coming out of the gates on fire once again to take an early lead and never looked back on their way to a 57-42 win over the Rebels.

In addition to Sonnenberg, Brynn Larson had a big game from the field as she scored 23 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals. The duo outscored the entire DGF team themselves as Sonnenberg and Larson scored 49 points, while the entire DGF team scored 42.

Also chipping in for the Hornets was Riyan Eckert who scored 6 points and finished with 4 rebounds.
