Frazee residents Mark and Dawn Flemmer returned to their home near the elementary school on Tuesday, March 19 to find the basement filling with water. “We were in Fargo that day, and decided to stop in Detroit Lakes to eat,” Flemmer said. “We got home later that night and found a surprise.” At first the Flemmers thought water may have leaked in from a basement window due to melting snow. “But when I got to the back bedroom I smelled it,” he said. “It was the sewer backing up.”

An overwhelming majority passed the two liquor issues in the special Frazee city election Tuesday. The issue of Sunday liquor passed by 85 percent, with 220 voting yes, and 37 voting no. The issue of allowing more liquor licenses in the city, for restaurants and hotels, passed by a 91 percent majority, with 234 voting yes and 22 no. Of 573 registered voters, 257 voted. The election, estimated to cost $1,000 was prompted by Chuck and Brenda Minge, who want to open Carlitos Cantina and Mexican Restaurant on Main Avenue in mid-April. Imagine the surprise one might feel when they take their first breath of morning air and see a buffalo in the sunrise. That experience happened to Monaya Brooks Schlaich at 7 Tuesday morning at her home northwest of Frazee. Straight on, it looked like a man with a fur coat, Monaya said. Once it made the curve though, Monaya was very surprised when she discovered it was a buffalo. The Becker County Sheriff’s Department reports the buffalo belongs to Roger Klemm, who lives about three miles from where the animal was spotted. The department notified Klemm about the buffalo sighting.

The Frazee Mrs. Jaycees will be collecting newspapers and magazines on Saturday, March 30, starting at 12 noon. The area within the city limits will be covered. Those wishing to have old newspapers and magazines picked up should place them on the curb in flat bundles of about 30 newspapers or 15 magazines tied with twine or cord. Those outside the collection area are urged to bring their paper to the former Creamery building between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Anyone unable to place bundles on the curb is asked to leave their porch light on and the collectors will pick them up. The Mrs. Jaycees will sell the paper to be recycled for insulation. Proceeds will be used for community projects.
