Courneya takes third place, Baumgart places eighth

State champion Nolyn Prellwitz holds his first place trophy in the 12-year-old boys’ free throw division, along with teammate Katie Courneya, who finished third in the 14-year-old girls competition and Hudson Baumgart, who recorded a top 10 finish in the 14-year-old boys’ division placing eighth.

Two Frazee basketball players earned hardware and all three shooters finished in the top 10 of their respective divisions at The Knights of Columbus 50th annual State Free Throw Championship on Saturday, April 6 at Cathedral High School in Saint Cloud. 

State entrants from the Frazee-Vergas area included Nolyn Prellwitz, Hudson Baumgart and Katie Courneya. 

Prellwitz bested the competition in the 12-year-old boys’ division, earning the state championship title.

Also taking home hardware was Courneya, who made 21 of 25 shot attempts in the 14-year-old girls’ competition, earning her the third-place trophy. 

In the 14-year-old boys’ division, Baumgart finished in 8th place. 

The event was the culmination of council, district and regional level competitions across the state, in which thousands of kids participated. 

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization.
