Donald Merrill Jr., 24, and his father Donald Merrill Sr., 52, both residents of Vergas, have been arrested in connection with the burglary of Billy’s Corner Bar. The incident, which took place on March 27, involved the theft of a 9mm handgun that was set to be raffled off as part of a charitable event.

Merrill, Jr. was accused of gaining entry to the bar by smashing out a front window, then smashing a glass showcase to steal the handgun after video surveillance footage was viewed.

He was initially apprehended on March 28, following a search warrant executed at a residence near Vergas, where the stolen handgun was recovered. 

Merrill Jr. was charged with first-degree burglary and felon in possession of a firearm, and was taken into custody.

After further investigation by the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, Donald Merrill Sr. was also arrested for his involvement in the burglary. He faces charges of burglary and felon in possession of a firearm.

Both Donald Merrill Jr. and Donald Merrill Sr. are currently in custody and prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
