The Frazee City Council was informed that 69 percent of landlords in Frazee were notified of violations to be fixed, and failed to do so. During the monthly council meeting on Monday, May 13, the city’s building inspector, Ben Riewer, reviewed a list that stated the rentals that failed and the person who owned the rental. According to the Frazee city website there are 26 landlords licensed to operate in the city. Of those listed, 18 landlords had not corrected violation notices. The council passed a rental ordinance and directed the city attorney to review the ordinance and move forward with the next step to ensure rentals are up to code and provide those residing in them a safe abode.
It was about 9:45 p.m. when Frazee-Vergas Schools Superintendent Terry Karger learned the news. The bond request for up to $25.6 million failed with 1,122 votes against and 632 in favor. With a quiet disposition Karger reflected, noting leading up to the election he heard comments on why a voter did not support the project, but there was no consistent glaring issue. Even though the bond failed, Karger expressed gratitude to those who took time to get informed on the issue and vote.

It may be a classic case scenario of what can happen when the cart is put before the horse. At a glance, the worst case scenario is that Frazee would lose its $1.4 million grant for its proposed $3 million street, water and sewer improvements and its senior complex. At best, the city may get off with a reprimand if it gets its paperwork in order. Last Thursday, the Department of Trade & Economic Development (which OK’d the $1,395,000 grant for Frazee) faxed a letter to city hall stating if financing for the senior housing 8-plex were not in order by June 1, DTED would not release funds for any other grant funded activities. This would include the new water tower which went up last week.
Vergas is slated to get an early start on its 2003 centennial celebration with souvenir stoneware gallon crocks with lids, available during Looney Days in August. That decision was made at the May 13 meeting of the Vergas Centennial Committee. The crocks—each with a picture of the old Vergas railroad depot—are to be the first in a series of five centennial stoneware items, introduced on a one-per-year basis through the year of the centennial.

“Weddings Remembered” was the theme chosen for a luncheon gathering at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Saturday, May 18 by the Ladies Aid. Punch was served as guests arrived while they viewed over a hundred wedding pictures on display. The tables were decorated with yellow streamers and daisy, along with white Bibles and wedding cake ornaments. Bouquets of flowers and an arch of greens and flowers completed the setting. Mrs. Helen Daggett extended a Welcome to the one hundred and seventy-five people attending program and luncheon. Thirty-two models were shown, the most recent one was Mrs. Tom Tester, (Jean Flatau); the oldest was that of Mrs. Henry Kraus’ dress of 1908. Her daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Trieglaff, modeled the dress and high heeled laced shoes worn at the wedding.
