For the first time, Tommy DeGroat and Brock Riewer had to sign-in as visitors at Frazee High School. The recent Hornet graduates returned to the school and the robotics classroom on Tuesday, May 21 because they weren’t quite ready to be done. “I’ve spent a lot of time here and I’m going to miss being part of this team,” Riewer said. DeGroat divulged he already misses being part of the robotics fun, and a student at Frazee High School. Luckily for both, past players can become mentors and help future teams continue the tradition of success and both stated they “definitely” plan to take advantage of that opportunity.
Members of the Frazee High School wrestling team met at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes to volunteer assistance in raising 650 flags to honor 921 veterans for Memorial Day. Dave Coalwell, one of the organizers, said Frazee has helped for at least 20 years to carry on the tradition. “Without the Frazee wrestlers I don’t think we could do this,” he said.
Earning a Triple Crown Award is a major accomplishment. Out of 61 students in the 2019 Frazee High School graduating class, only three students earned the title. Gabe Drewes, Taylor Wilkowski and Joby Giefer were the only three students to compete in three sports as a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior.

Can a wall unify, instead of divide? Perhaps. Consider the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial, otherwise known as The Wall. The memorial, which lists the names of service people lost during the Vietnam era, sends a universal message common to America’s other memorials: this country honors its heroes. That’s an especially important message, because many who returned home from Vietnam service weren’t treated with honor. Tim Bauer was one of the lucky ones. “When I came home, I was very fortunate,” said Bauer. “My dad was lieutenant in WWII. He earned the bronze star. He was a commander at the Legion in my home town (Hamel).” Bauer feels his parents helped him readjust. “I had great parents, and that really helped.”
Cement truck driver Tom Davis of rural Detroit Lakes was not hurt, despite being trapped in his truck for almost two hours last Thursday afternoon. Vergas Fire & Rescue responded at about 12:30 p.m. to a report of an accident on the east shore of Loon Lake where a home was under construction. Davis was driving a Strata concrete company cement truck near a basement when the ground gave away. The back end of the truck slid into the basement, twisting the cab and pinning the driver. Fire Chief Paul Pinke said Davis had one leg pinned between the door and the seat. Pinke said there was a danger that the truck could continue to roll, so it had to be stabilized before extraction could begin.

The largest class in the history of the Frazee-Vergas Schools, 120 seniors, will graduate Friday night, May 31. The 69th Annual Commencement exercises will be held at 8 p.m. outdoors at the football field. In case of poor weather, the program will be moved to the gymnasium. There will not be a commencement speaker this year, instead addresses will be given by three honor students, Joni Kelly, Kathi Arenson and Randall Schaefer. Mrs. Quentin Walseth, president of the school board, will present the diplomas to the graduates.
At the Senior Class Night Program on May 24 at the Frazee High School, five scholarships were awarded by Daggett Truck Line. Graduates receiving these $500 scholarships were Brenda Adams, Mike Edstrom, Alan Niemann, Joanne Riebe, and Peggy Weedling. The purpose of these scholarships are to help the recipients further their education. Marvin Daggett presented the awards.
