Climbing up the ranks on a dirt race track, Chelsea Samuelson was the only female racer in the main event at the recent Flatout Fargo race. She held her motorcycle steady coming off of corner four. A nudge from another rider, which some spectators thought appeared intentional, sent her into a nosedive. “I took a dirt nap when I hit the ground,” the 20-year-old said, adding the video her mom took showed she was run over, which explained the cracked helmet. “I’d rather wipe out on concrete because then you tend to slide, but with dirt you tumble and tumble.”

Frazee appears to be back on track with its $1.4 million grant. That’s the word Clerk Teri Osterman received over the phone Tuesday from Leona Humphrey of the Department of Trade & Economic Development. Earlier, Humphrey wrote the city stating its $1.4 million grant was in jeopardy due to procedural problems with the Frazee Economic Development Authority’s senior housing complex. Now that all the paperwork of the bonding is in place, Osterman believes that work could resume on the senior housing complex.

Several Frazee High School athletes placed at the Region 6 Track Meet held at Morris on Saturday, June 1. Jerome Tappe was fifth in the region in the shot put, hitting 43’10”. Myron Bunkowske was fifth in the high hurdles, running 16.3. Jim Sanders long jumped 20’7 3/4” for fourth in the long jump. This is a new school record, beating the 20’6” set by Roger Krause in 1968. The 880 yard relay team placed third with a new school record time of 1:35.5. The team of Myron Bunkowske, Carl Otto, Jim Sanders and Jack Dretsch was less than a second behind first place and the right to advance to the State Track Meet June 7 and 8. The old record was held by Tim Courneya, Keith Bunkowske, Merlin Kansas and Tom Watson in 1971. The oldest record on the books at Frazee High School, 16.2 seconds in the 120 yd. high hurdles, set by Marvin Daggett in 1947, was beaten by both Scot Blaine and Myron Bunkowske, who both ran 16.1 in the Heart of Lakes preliminaries. The record will go to Scot as he beat Myron in the finals. Coach Chuck Flach commented, “We’re especially proud of anyone who breaks a record because that shows it is the best performance in all the years up to this time and a record may stand for some years into the future. I don’t think there are any hard feeling by the old record holder because he recognizes better than anyone that the new records is a really good performance.”
