Hornets finish in fourth place at sections

The Frazee boys golf team recently competed in the final regular season meet for the Heart O’ Lakes Conference at Balmoral Golf Course. It was a meet that if participants scored well enough they could be an all-conference golfer in the HOL for the season.  

Ben Reierson overcame a broken foot at the section meet to finish in 10th place individually.

The Hornets brought five golfers to the meet. Brodie Masbauch an eighth grader has been improving every meet since being a regular on the varsity squad. He shot 101 and had some trouble with the speed of the greens.  

Frazee’s number four guy was Tyler Lindell. He is a tough bugger as his strap for his bag broke and had to carry it from the handle, which had to have killed his forearms. He ended up shooting a nice 92 for the day.  

The person who plays number 3 for Frazee has been on a bit of a hot streak placing in the last three events. Ben Reierson, also an eighth grader, had the meet of the year shooting 76. If he would not have doubled the last hole he would have won the tournament. Instead, he tied for second for the day.

Cayden Wallin, Frazee’s number two, could not get anything consistent going but still shot a respectable 92.  It was not what he was hoping for because he was on the cut line for making all-conference for the season and missed it by two strokes.  He was understandably upset, but head coach Jason Reierson said he thinks it will drive him for next season.  

Adam Vigen came along and played as Frazee’s number one golfer. He did not have enough meets in this year to qualify for all-conference, but really had a nice day shooting 82. That was good enough for an 11th place finish. 

Wrapping up the HOL season Ben Reierson was the only Hornet this year to make all-conference.  He placed 10th for the season with an 82 average.  

The Section 6A tournament was held at Perham Lakeside. The Hornets had not played against these teams this season so it was all new for these guys.  After shooting the 76 in the conference tournament Ben Reierson broke his foot and his doctor told him not to play.  Luckily he went to a Podiatrist that said he could play in a boot if he could stand the pain.  

The Hornets brought the same five guys that had played in the conference tournament.  The first day golfers have to qualify as an individual, or as a team, to move on and play the second day.  The Hornets responded with some good golf.  

Brodie Masbauch was hot with his putter and sank a 35 footer on the last hole to have Frazee qualify as a team. Only the top four teams get to play the second day and that has not happened for the Hornets in at least 20 years. What a great day.

After day one the guys were in a pretty good position to make a run the second day for an individual invitation to the state tournament. They were in 12th, 13th and 17th position. Ben Reierson struggled the last five holes with the boot and was cramping from walking so much.   

Day two came and the weather became somewhat of a factor with a few downpours. Brodie Masbauch shot the best round of his young career scoring 92.  Tyler Lindell was disappointed in his effort and carded a 111. Cayden Wallin could just not get in a groove and shot 97. Adam Vigen had some great holes but followed them up with some poor ones which led to a 92. Ben Reierson hung around, but just could not get off of the bogey train in the last bunch of holes and ended up shooting 86.  

The team battled to a fourth place finish. Ben Reierson ended up being our strokes from getting to compete at the state tournament.  He was upset, but he is only in eighth grade and gutted it out playing with a boot on his foot.  He ended up in 10th for both days of the tournament.  

Head coach Jason Reierson said he did not think anyone, including these guys, would have thought that we would have made it this far.  It was a great growing season.  

The Hornets had three sophomores and 2 eighth graders that competed all year long.  Reierson said the Hornets have some other guys that he thinks will make steps this summer to improve. The Hornets will have their end of season banquet and golf tournament on June 11.
