Firefighters rushed to 601 East Main Avenue in Frazee on Tuesday, July 2 after dispatchers reported a structure was on fire. Frazee Fire Chief Joe Nelson said the call to first responders noted there was smoke coming out of the house, and shortly after visible flames were spotted on the roof. The Frazee Fire Department made the initial attack on the fire, as assistance was requested of neighboring departments in Vergas, Detroit Lakes and Wolf Lake. Nelson said the fire started in a bedroom on the second story of the house and made it to the attic. However, the quick response time prevented the fire from spreading and contained the damage. To put the fire out an estimated 500 to 1,000 gallons of water was used.

Dewayne Schaefer, of rural Frazee, has closed his road and emptied the pond which is used to water the ball fields in Frazee. This came as a response to the news that the Department of Natural Resources was opposed to the removal of the sand dam near Highway 87, which was used during the sawmill days. Schaefer would like see the dam removed for a more “free-flowing” river, and the city has put its removal on hold for the time being after DNR wrote a letter opposing its removal. Schaefer has closed his driveway which connects the ball fields to County Road 29. Those visiting the ball fields may gain access by using the Highway 87 turnoff on River Drive.
