Connie Lee, a fourth generation Vergas resident, was ready to make a campaign run for city council this year when her quest was sidetracked by a health scare.

She was diagnosed with a “manageable heart condition,” at nearly the same time she filled out the paperwork to get on the ballot. After talking with her doctor, it was decided that a run for office might not be the best thing to tackle with her newfound condition.

“It is new and politics are not good for it and my doctor told me to slow down,” Connie said.

She wanted to get her name removed from the ballot but was two days past the county’s deadline to do so.

Connie is disappointed she is not officially running, while officially being on the ballot, but still plans to make a difference in a town she loves.

“I really wanted to be the voice for Vergas and listen and deal with these ordinances that are a very sore topic these days,” Connie said. “Vergas is a vacation destination and I’ve watched people for years travel thousands of miles and spend lots of money to come to our area and we get to live here.”

In the future, she hopes to contribute in a less public manner for the betterment of the village.

“More behind the scenes,” she said. “Working on the little stuff that makes up the big picture. I still want to be very active.”

Vergas has four other council candidates running for two open seats, each a four-year term. The other candidates are incumbents Bruce E. Albright and Natalie Fischer, and candidates Rebecca Hasse and James Stenger.

Connie’s name was listed in the Forum’s Voter’s Guide that was published in our Oct. 22 issue without any other information. The Forum regrets any confusion this caused.
