Several local kids enjoyed a successful weekend of youth rifle season opener. They hunted on some friend’s property south of Rock Lake outside of Detroit lakes and with the amount of deer that they saw they were able to enjoy the nature of watching deer and successfully harvesting one of their own. McKenzie Blauert, 15, was able to harvest her first-ever buck. She was so excited as 3 right point bucks came out at the same time so she sized them up and was able to get a good clean shot at the one. She plans to keep the horns in remembrance of her first ever buck. Her brother Levi Blauert, 11, sat with his grandpa on the same property just on a different alfalfa field and sat most of the afternoon not seeing anything until it was about 5 p.m. and was able to harvest a very nice sized doe. He broke his finger on his dominant shooting hand so had to shoot with the other hand and was very successful dropping her right away without having to track. This was his first-ever deer and first time youth hunting. They had so much fun! Brayden Ueke shot this doe on the last day of the youth deer season with 10 minutes left in the season. Charlee Olds, daughter of Derek and Amber Olds, tagged her first deer during the youth hunting season.
