Playing a massive hit with a rock legend all began with a handwritten note from a former Snellman resident. Tyler Steinle and his band members of 32 Below were bringing gear into a downtown bar in Fargo, N.D. for a show later that night. “Kris Kristofferson was playing a sold out show at the Fargo Theatre,” Steinle said. “His bus pulled up and we thought, ‘oh my gosh.’ We decided to stick a note on the door of his bus.” The note read: “Hey, we’re huge fans. We’re playing at Dempseys from 10 to close tonight and would be absolutely stoked if y’all came out since we can’t make it to your show. We’d love to buy you a beer or five.” About 45 minutes into the first set of the 32 Below show, in walked the singer-songwriter and actor. “He came in, sat down had a beer and enjoyed the show,” Steinle recalled. “We had been practicing his song, ‘Me and Bobby McGee’ and I asked if I could play it.”
Beth Taurus was on her way home to Wolf Lake when she spotted a dead kitten on the road. “I thought that was odd,” she recalled. “Then a little further up I see another kitten, and then another that was alive with blood on its face.” She found a safe place to turn around on State Highway 87 and pulled to the side of the road where the kitten was trembling. “It was very nice and friendly,” she said.

Kevin Ketter has been an active meat processor more than 20 years and the 1999 deer season opening weekend was the warmest he remembers. Besides that, opening weekend was very successful in terms of deer harvest. Ketter said he’d rank it in the top 10, in the past quarter century or so. This meant meat processing plants—such as Ketter’s Meat Market & Locker Plant of Frazee—had a rush of business after that first weekend because the meat had to be cooled to prevent the spoilage. On the Monday after the weekend (Nov. 8), Ketter’s got 200 deer. It was the most deer ever received there at one time, and in order to keep the meat cool, Ketter’s had to get a cooling unit from Daggett Truck Line of Frazee.
Tom Dressen and Paul Thon, of Frazee Electric, installed a pole on Frazee’s West Main Avenue. Installation began Tuesday following an extended period in which a section of the avenue had no lights. The installation is part of a three-phase project to replace the lights on Main and Lake.
People who might otherwise sip soup in solitude on Thanksgiving can instead taste turkey and trimmings together. The Fellowship Board of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Frazee, will be serving a free turkey dinner with trimmings Thursday, Nov. 25 for people who would otherwise spend Thanksgiving alone. The motivation behind it is the condition that no one should be alone on the holiday, said Donna Ouart, a member of the board who is helping to coordinate the event.

Two inmates at the Becker County jail in Detroit Lakes escaped Sunday morning and an all-points bulletin has been put out for the pair. The men, Joseph Busenburg, 19, and Michael Machinpiness, 21, apparently hacksawed their way though a lock on their cell door. A cafe employee who was bringing breakfast to the inmates, was locked in the jail by the men. The pair then broke into the jail’s wall safe and took a pistol and personal belongings before making their escape. The men stole a car from a parking lot, then abandoned it near Lake Melissa where they then took a car from the Gust Engburg home after typing up Engburg and his wife. The Engburg’s were ablate free themselves and call the sheriff’s office. Busenburg was awaiting trial in district court on two charges of burglary and Machipiness was awaiting trial on charges of rape and robbery.
