On a sleepless night Kathy Dretsch started dreaming. The Frazee resident had learned about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which mails books to children from birth until they begin school, free of charge, regardless of their family’s financial status. Dretsch said the only month that books aren’t delivered is in December. With many toy drives providing holiday gifts under the tree, she pitched the idea of promoting the gift of literacy to the Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary Club.
When a Minnesota National Guard helicopter crashed on Thursday, Dec. 5 near St. Cloud, it claimed the lives of three soldiers. Vergas resident Chief Warrant Officer 2 Charles P. Nord, age 30; Chief Warrant Officer 2 James A. Rogers Jr., 28 and Sgt. Kort M. Plantenberg, 28, were killed. Nord was a 2007 Perham High School graduate who had returned from a nine-month deployment to the Middle East in May with the rest of hte members in his unit. The mission overseas was to conduct medical evacuations.

Extremely slippery roads Dec. 2 caused two one-vehicle accidents almost at the same time within five miles of each other. Both vehicles went in ditches. Both were driven by teenage girls from rural Frazee. Both were injured. Neither had passengers. Members of the Frazee Rescue Squad responded to both accidents. One accident, reported at 8:15 a.m. involved a 1987 Ford Escort driven by Becky Ranae Blauert, 17. The other, reported at 8:16 a.m., involved a 1978 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Ashley Marie Estenson, 16, according to the accident report.
About 3,600 turkeys perished and their barn was destroyed in a fire at a farm owned by Dennis and John Anderson, rural Frazee, Dec. 1. Dennis Anderson said he and his son raise egg production turkeys at that location and at his home, about a mile away, on Country Road 43. The barn that burned was one of four at the 140th Street location, he said. The fire was discovered at about 8:50 p.m. and “It was burning pretty good then,” said Anderson.

The $2,815 in donations given to the recently completed Frazee Community Fund Drive marks a new high in receipts for the annual appeal, according to Dorene Johnson and Betty Boardman, co-chairmen of the drive. The contributions to the 1974 Drive topped the $2,712 given in the 1973 Fund Drive.
The Frazee High School Concert Choir, Vocal Chamber, and Pop Group, under the direction of Mrs. Joyce Kelly, will present their annual Christmas Concert on Monday night, Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. in the Frazee High School Gymnasium. On Wednesday, Dec. 18, they will tape part of their concert for KDLM radio during their regular chorus period which will be played back sometime during the week of Christmas. On Thursday, Dec. 19, they will tape part of the concert over KTHI-TV at 2 p.m. which will be re-played on Christmas Day at 12 p.m. on Channel 11.
