The Vergas Community Club is at the heart of what makes Vergas such a success when it comes to hosting events that draw big crowds year round in the village. At the core of those achievements is leadership and outgoing Community Club President Sherri Hanson was surprised with a seasonal centerpiece and appreciation from her club colleagues for her efforts Thursday, Dec. 5, at Vergas State Bank.

Hanson related a story of her childhood and experiences with her father Rodger and how she learned from his commitment to Vergas.

“We grew up with that,” she said. “You would hear, ‘You’ve got to be community involved’ and stuff like that,” Hanson said. “I’ve always felt it a privilege to work on what him and Rodney (Hanson) and Gordon (Hanson) and all those guys did.”

Organizer and board member Vanessa Perry told Hanson that it was well known Sherri did not do the work with the club for any recognition.

“Your time and energy has not been unnoticed,” Perry said.

Vergas State Bank President Daren Berube also spoke of Hanson’s impact and ability to create and foster constructive relationships with many people.

“One thing I’ve found from working with Sherri and also with the community club is the relationships that she builds from people not just in this room or this community but outside the community,” he said. “She brings a lot of that to the bank and also to the community club.”

Hanson was quick to express her thankfulness on how her position at the bank allows her to have the time to contribute in so many other places.

“One of the big things about the efforts that I’ve put in is because of the job I hold and the bank allowing me to,” Hanson said. “It’s been awesome and it’s been a good ride.”

While Hanson is stepping down as club president she will still be heavily involved and remains on the board.

“I’m not going anywhere,” she said.

Her son Josh has been hinting recently that it’s okay to take a step back and that she has plenty of reasons to take some time for herself.

“Josh has been telling me the past two months, ‘You have nine reasons (grandchildren) to not be president anymore,’” Hanson laughed.

Vice President Joy Summers will be taking over the role of Community Club President beginning in 2025.

In deference to Hanson’s efforts, Summers joked, “I’ll happily lower the bar.”

Summers also explained that the club’s turnover is more of a ratification of officers, not just a replacement, while Hanson said it was important for her to remain on the board to be a part of this transition.

The Community Club will hold a membership drive this coming February for those interested in  volunteering.
