Taylor Wutzke and her sister Kenzie took to the kitchen, baked up a storm of cookies and sold them at recent holiday events to raise funds for Girls, Inc. Taylor, a former Miss Frazee title holder, shared she and her sister support the organization that inspires all girls to be smart, bold and strong. A network of local nonprofit organizations serves girls ages 6-18 at more than 1,500 sites in 350 cities across the United States and Canada with programming that focuses on the development mentoring and more.

Abby Wothe just made on of her dreams come true. The Frazee High School senior recently signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Minnesota Morris softball team. “I’m pretty sure I started playing softball in preschool,” she said. While she has no specific memories from those formative years learning basic skills of the game, Wothe does remember the feeling. “It was fun,” she said. “It has always been fun.”

In truth, this won’t rank as Arlin “Jake” Jacobson’s most memorable Christmas. After all, it’s hard to compete with last year. Jake said he was just glad he was “still there to enjoy it (Christmas 1998),” after the loss of his left hand in an accident. Now, a year later, he has gotten a new prosthesis that looks and moves as much like his own hand as medical science can manage at this time. He and his wife Lorna are looking forward to another year together as they go ab out holiday preparations such as making lease at their home in rural Vergas.

Internet commerce is a two-way street, according to Frazee Postmaster Rollie Canham. It’s obvious at the post office that more local people are shopping by Internet, but local people are also selling through the Internet, Canham pointed out. There’s also a definite increase in the number of local people who are shopping from television channel QVC, he added. There has been a proliferation in the number of postal packages from “dot com,” a standard component of Internet addresses, Canham noted. The increase in the number of “priority mail” packages is another indication of Internet shopping, he added.

Denise Fredericton is the new Turkey Days co-chair. Her appointment was announced by Turkey Days Chair Fred Daggett at the Dec. 14 meeting of the Frazee Community Club. Anyone who becomes co-chair usually serves a year in that post and then becomes chair, according to Community Club President Bob McTaggart. “It’s usually a two-year commitment,” he said.

Michele Haley, fourth place; Jim Sanders, third place; Ann Daggett, second place; and Brenda Stanton, first place. The speeches were taped by KDLM Radio and the winning speech will be sent to a Regional Voice of Democracy contest.

A cow owned by Hank Ludtke of Frazee drowned in the Otter Tail River at the south edge of town last Monday night when it strayed onto the ice and broke through. Ludtke had bought the animal the day before for butchering. He had it locked in a shed at his bottle glass business place and believes someone let the animal out. The cow wandered about one-fourth mile from where it was shedded. Several men attempted to rescue the animal when it was found nearly submerged, but their efforts failed.
