Spend Sundays at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge

0Snowshoe Sundays. Snowshoes will be available to borrow Sundays Jan. 5- Feb. 23 at the visitor center from 12-4 p.m. Experience the quiet beauty of winter. Volunteers will be available to recommend a trail for you. There will also be an hour-long wildlife movie every Sunday at 2 p.m.
• Sunday, Jan. 5, 2 p.m. Movie: Wolverines- Chasing the Phantom. This film takes you into the secretive world of the largest and least known member of the weasel family to reveal who this dynamic little devil truly is. 55 min.
• Sunday, Jan. 12, 2 p.m. Movie: American Arctic. Vast, wild and untouched, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is where some of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles unfold. Situated in the northeast corner of Alaska, this refuge has long protected survivors of the Ice Age that still roam a frozen wilderness. 55 min.
• Sunday, Jan. 12, Youth Ice Fishing Mentoring Day 1-4 p.m. This is a great opportunity to learn how to ice fish. Individuals drill the holes, provide a warming shelter, and tips on winter fishing. This free experience is geared for youth 6-16, but the whole family can tag along. Go to “events” at www.tamaracfriends.org to register a child for a time to meet with volunteer mentors at 1, 2, or 3 p.m. Those signed up will receive free fishing kits, so registration is important. Participants will be meeting at the Long Bridge Restaurant (2000 Long Bridge Rd, Detroit Lakes) parking lot; look for the blue banners. If unstable ice, location may change. Winter visitor center hours: Sundays 12-4 p.m. Jan. 5-Feb. 23. The visitor center is located 9 miles north of the junction of County Hwy 34 and County Hwy 29. For more information on the refuge and events go to www.fws.gov/refuge/tamarac.
