Vance Bachmann has been one of the 400 plus residents in Corliss Township since he was born to Warren and Marlys Bachmann. For the 1995 Perham High School graduate, it was only natural that he serve the community that served him so well through childhood, his teenage years and young adulthood. After a dozen years as a supervisor for Corliss Township, Bachmann was elected District Nine director for the Minnesota Association of Townships.
Terry Birkeland just survived a woodworker’s biggest fear. On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the 1994 Frazee High School graduate was pounding away on remodeling the interior of his house on the outskirts of Frazee. When the clock neared 6:30 p.m., he looked out an upstairs window and caught a glimpse of orange. “Then I saw sparks, flames on the peak of my shop,” he recalled. The shop is located on his 30-acre parcel a hundred feet or so from his homestead.

With the possible exception of some spirited partying, it was a peaceful New Year’s Eve. No computer-related irregularities were reported in connection with Saturday’s four-digit turnover of “1999” to “2000.” The widespread wave of malfunctions which once had been predicted for New Year’s Eve did not materialize. Fire of undetermined origin on Christmas Day destroyed the Dean Stilke home located about five miles southwest of Frazee in Burlington Township. Stilke and his son, Nathan, were outside when the fire broke out about 11 a.m. His wife, Sally and daughter, were vacationing with relatives in Florida. Frazee firemen were unable to save the one-story home. The shell remained standing, but the fire broke out again after the firemen had left. All of the Stilke’s personal possessions were lost in the fire, along with many of Mrs. Stilke’s antiques and Dean’s collection of antique guns.
