“Tin cans. Destroyers in the South Pacific,” said Clarence Paurus. The World War II veteran sat inside the Wolf Lake Lions Hall during the post’s Jan. 11 fundraising event. Paurus raised a hand and pointed toward one of his hearing aids. “Explosives. That’s where my hearing went to hell,” the U.S. Navy veteran said. “But the VA’s been pretty good to me.” At age 17, fresh out of Sebeka High School, Paurus headed to the war.

Eldor Huwe smiled as he watched the 57th annual Wolf Lake VFW fundraiser unfold. The gathering took place on Jan. 11 at the Wolf Lake Lions Hall. Huwe, one of only two World War II veterans remaining in the Wolf Lake Post 8165, also happens to be one of the three men who began the fundraising event, nearly six decades ago. The 92-year-old, who now resides in the Frazee Care Center, reflected on piloting that project recently, recalling how he, Lloyd Mickelson and Herbert Kearney decided to begin a fishing derby, holding it on Toad Lake and choosing a washing machine to be the grand prize.

A headset phone is like part of Brian Bigger’s anatomy. He has it on in his office whether he’s using it or not. He does use it a lot, though. He’s involved in 80-90 phone conversations a day, and some of them are quite long. “Everything we do is over the phone, primarily,” he said. Bigger’s business, headquartered out of the old creamery building in downtown Frazee, is called ARG Associates. It’s a placement/search firm.
