Hornet alum Scott Bergman, added another milestone to his girls basketball coaching career in Sauk Centre after recording his 500th career victory on Friday, Jan. 17, in a win over Albany 56-40.
The win kept the Mainstreeters undefeated this season with a record of 15-0.
Bergman led Sauk Centre to the 2017-18 Class AA state championship, has been named the state girls’ basketball Coach of the Year multiple times and was inducted into the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Class of 2017.
Bergman’s state title team ran the table finishing 33-0 in 2018. His 500 victories have him just shy of the top 25 all-time. He trails Heron Lake’s Les Knutson (519) by 19 wins.
New London-Spicer’s Mike Dreier leads the list while still coaching. He is closing in on 1,100 victories.
Bergman is the second coach at Sauk Centre to record 500 coaching victories this school year. Volleyball Head Coach Jim Klaphake recorded his 500th career win in late August.
Bergman graduated from Frazee-Vergas in 1981 and was a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2013.
While a Hornet, he earned 11 letters in five sports: football (3), basketball (3), baseball (3), track (1), and golf (1). He was recognized as an all-conference recipient in football (1), basketball (1), and baseball (3). In baseball, he was also awarded 1981 Park Region Conference Most Valuable Player and was the first Frazee baseball player to be chosen to play in the Lions All Star Game.
He continued his athletic pursuits at South Dakota State University and later at Bemidji State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1985. He was a baseball letter winner at both colleges. Academically, he obtained a Master’s in Education from St. Thomas University in 1992.
Scott is the son of Eldon and Violet Bergman.
