Marty Cassellius has seen firsthand the devastation of the Australian fires. Reports have stated that more than 16 million acres have burned in New South Wales and Victoria. To put that into perspective, that is about the size of West Virginia and Rhode Island combined. Cassellius, who is married to Frazee resident Diane Mistelske’s daughter, Lisa, explained the U.S. has an international agreement with Australia to assist in fire fighting when needed.
A house fire at 517 East Main Avenue has left a man with severe burns and displaced a family. Frazee Fire Chief Joe Nelson said the call came in at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20. “When we arrived the house was fully involved, which means the conditions were too bad to send anyone in,” Nelson said. He added the Frazee Police had arrived on scene prior to the fire department, and assisted the injured individual that was inside to safety.
Had one thing changed in the chain of events that unfolded Friday, Jan. 17, Beth Somerville may have not made it to her 60th birthday that Sunday. “We’re pretty private people, and not too interested in being in the paper, but we both feel we need to let people know how important it is to have carbon monoxide detectors in their houses,” the Rochert resident said.

Frazee Mayor Fred Daggett gave those attending the annual Frazee Community Club meeting Jan. 20 a look at the future of Frazee. Daggett, wearing many hats, reported on the state of the city, Frazee’s Economic Development Authority and the Frazee Area Action Fund. In regards to Frazee’s EDA, Daggett said he’s excited about the new industrial park. He gives much of the credit for this development to the great relationship Frazee has with Becker County Economic Developer Al Roder, and Midwest Minnesota Community Development Corporation leader Arlan Kangas.
The sounds of barking dogs will echo in the air this weekend as the second annual Third Crossing Sled Dog Rendezvous gets under way. Races start at 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday, with the last race at 1:30 p.m. at the race site located off Old Highway 10 exit to Frazee.

The school board of the Frazee-Vergas School District went on record last Monday night, January 27, at its regular school board meeting instructing Supt. Ingebrigtson that further loss of school time resulting from the bomb threats shall be made up by shortening vacation periods in an amount of time equal to the time lost. This decision was made after hearing a report from Supt. Ingebrigtson of a bomb threat that was received on Friday, January 17, through the mail.
Frazee area residents had to bring out their snow shovels again as four inches of snow fell here Tuesday night. Road travel was slowed considerably due to the heavy snow accumulation.
A rural Detroit Lakes woman was killed and her husband seriously injured in a train-pickup collision near Detroit Lakes about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. The victim was Mrs. Laddie (Virginia) Turcotte, 17, Route 5, Detroit Lakes, a senior at Detroit Lakes High School. She died shortly after arrival at St. Mary’s Hospital. Laddie Turcotte, 23, a graduate of Frazee High School, was taken to St. Luke’s. Hospital in Fargo where he is reported in critical condition.
