Breckenridge junior guard Parker Yaggie hit a pair of threes and two free throws scoring eight of her team-high 14 points in a two-minute span to spark a second half comeback victory for the visiting Cowgirls over the Hornets 53-50 in Heart of Lakes Conference girls basketball action on Friday, Jan. 31.

The game was tight throughout with Frazee holding a four-point lead at halftime 26-22.

The teams played to a stalemate at 40-all at the midway point of the second half on a three ball from Breckendridge sophomore Adriana Spear.

Frazee junior Brynn Larson and the Cowgirls’ Mariah Koltes traded buckets to remain tied until Katie Courneya gave Frazee a 45-42 lead by hitting a three-pointer with 7:37 to play.

That bucket led to Yaggie answering from long distance at 6:40 and hitting two free throws a minute later to put the visitors up 47-45.

The Hornets’ leading scorer Jayden Sonnenberg knotted the score at 47-all with 4:25 remaining in the game, but Yaggie raced downcourt and drained another three-pointer immediately to answer and give Breckenridge the lead for good 50-47.

Both Ruby Eckert and Larson got to the line as time wound down, each making one of two shots, but Johnica Bernotes negated those points with a field goal.

Frazee trailed 52-48 with 1:42 left on the clock, but failed to score on the ensuing offensive trip down the floor. A big defensive rebound at the other end by Larson and a full court pass to Sonnenberg led to an easy bucket and cut the Cowgirls lead to 52-50 with 43 seconds remaining.

Piper Jaehning scored from the line on her second attempt forcing Frazee to aim for three to tie in the waning seconds.

Out of a timeout with 20 seconds to play Bernotas just missed a game-ending steal off the inbound and the Hornets recovered the ball passing around the perimeter to Hailee Olson in the corner. Olson’s three to tie just missed allowing Breckenridge to escape with a 53-50 victory.

Sonnenberg led all scorers with 18 points, the lone Hornet in double figures. Larson added nine and Courneya seven points.

Yaggie and Bernotas paced the Cowgirls (14-5, 7-4) with 14 points each. The victory was the ninth win in the last 11 games for Breckenridge.

Frazee came into the game on a two-game win streak but fell to 12-9 overall and 6-7 in the HOL. The Hornets left eight points at the stripe, shooting 50 percent on the night (8-16). Breckenridge sank 8 of 11 freebies (73 percent).

The Hornets have a week off before a rematch with Perham (10-8, 7-5). Frazee defeated the Yellowjackets at The Hive in Perham 62-60 in mid-December.
