Chefs are known for taking great pride and care in creating a dish that bursts taste buds in joyous flavor. Many kitchen masters also guard their recipes. The 12 chefs at Spanky’s Stone Hearth decided to open the safe and share some of their secrets. The restaurant on Rose Lake is known for providing the lakes area with a fine dining experience that is second to none. The Frazee-Vergas School Board Budget and Facility committee discussed a projected $600,000 budget deficit, and considered making a recommendation for a secured entrance at the elementary. During the committee meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 4, Frazee Schools Superintendent Terry Karger explained the budget that would be reviewed at the next monthly board meeting. Karger said the initial anticipated deficit amount was about $300,000. However that has increased to $600,000 with recent projected numbers. After the meeting Karger was sent an e-mail asking how much would remain in the general fund after the projected deficit is removed. He noted the numbers would be reviewed and provided at the school board’s monthly meeting, which was on Monday, Feb. 10, after the paper went to press.

Frazee may see a little urban renewal this year. Plans are to renovate two homes and build two new ones if grant proposals come through. Becky Manske of Becker County Housing outlined two grant plans at Monday’s Frazee City Council meeting. The agency has purchase agreements on two homes in Frazee contingent upon receiving a grant for their renovations. These homes are located at 502 W. Main and 201 Fifth Street.

Unlike some years, there will be some competition in some township elections in March. Filing deadline was last week, and in Burlington, Hobart, Wolf Lake and Erie townships, candidates will be competing for three-year supervisor terms. On the other hand, no one will be on the ballot to be elected as clerk in Burlington, Wolf Lake, Spruce Grove or Carsonville. In many cases, however, incumbents will be running without any on-ballot competition in the March 14 elections. Voters in every township will elect a supervisor for a three-year term and a clerk for a two-year term. Voters in some townships will also elect additional supervisors for shorter periods of time, to fill unexpired terms.

The Frazee Fire Department was called out about 5:50 a.m. Friday to extinguish a fire at the Daggett Truck Line paint shop located in back of the Red Owl. Oil had apparently overflowed in a furnace and the heater and floor were burning. The fire chief credited policeman Kent Lund who turned in the alarm, whose alertness prevented what could have been a very serious fire. Lund discovered the fire while making his early morning patrol rounds and summoned the firemen.
