Caleb Monson recently returned from Las Vegas, Nev. and is preparing to take one of the biggest gambles of his life. He is quitting his job as a youth minister and relying on donations to survive. “I started praying, asking if what I wanted to do was the right thing,” he said. “After I went on a mission trip last January, I realized I could make a difference.” The mission trip was working with F.R.E.E. International, a non-profit that began in 2007 with headquarters in New York City, but missionaries throughout the country working to abolish modern-day slavery.

The Frazee City Council held a hearing last week to consider its options with the city-owned Third Crossing Bar and Grill. The store, which offers a bar (on-sale) and a liquor store (off-sale) has lost money the last four out of five years, according to the state auditor report. The state auditor report is a year behind, and available files date back to 1995. Since 1995, the store saw its largest deficit in the most recent year reported (2018) of $61,407. Prior to that the largest loss was in 2016 of $40,459.

Charlie Brown, the lead character in the late Charles Schultz’s famous comic strip, “Peanuts,” never became an adult. However, the man who may have been the original role model for Charlie Brown did. He’s now pushing 94 and lives in Vergas Assisted Living. His name is really Charles “Charlie” Brown. Schultz, 77, died in his sleep Saturday after a battle with cancer, as the last original cartoon was being published in newspapers worldwide. In an interview program on Minnesota Public Radio Sunday, someone said Schultz once was asked, “Is Charlie Brown based on you?” and answered, “No, he’s based on my friend Charlie Brown.” Did he mean Charlie Brown, now of Vergas? “I’ve wondered at times,” said the former. Brown said Schultz never actually told him he was the role model, but there is circumstantial evidence which indicates it might be true.

Dawn Mattson, 36, Detroit Lakes, was recently hired by the City of Frazee to manage its liquor store. Mattson, currently manager of the American Legion Club in Detroit Lakes, was chosen from a field of eight applicants. She will replace Al Brandt, who has been manager for many years. Mattson has a long list of credentials for the job. She worked six years at the Lake Park Municipal Liquor Store, performing duties such as bartender, waitress and assistant manager.
