The Frazee Hornets will open the sub section playoffs on Thursday night on the road as they will take on fourth seeded Hillcrest. The Hornets, who finished the season with a record of 11-14 overall, received the fifth seed in a loaded sub section that features three teams who have been ranked at times throughout the season and two teams currently ranked inside the top six in the state.

The Comets received the fourth seed and are 20-6 overall.

The winner of Thursday’s game will take on either top seeded Ada-Borup West, who are 22-5 on the season and ranked sixth in the state, or the winner of eighth seeded Rothsay who is 13-12 on the season or ninth seeded Lake Park-Audubon who is 7-19 on the season on Saturday in Perham.

On the other side of the bracket, Park Christian received the second seed and is 22-4 on the season and will take on either seventh seeded Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal, who is 12-14 on the season, or 10th seeded New York Mills, who is 8-18 on the season. Third seeded and fourth ranked Henning, who is 23-3 on the season, will take on either sixth seeded Underwood, who is 13-13 on the season or 11th seeded Battle Lake, who is 2-23 on the season, in the opening round.

Last week the Hornets fell to Park Rapids Area in their regular season and Heart O’ Lakes Conference finale by a score of 82-80. The loss leaves the Hornets in a tie with Hawley with a conference record of 3-13 and in a seventh place tie.

Perham won the conference with a record of 13-3, while Barnesville and Pelican Rapids were both 12-4 to tie for second place, while Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton was in fourth place with a record of 11-5, Staples-Motley was fifth with a record of 8-8, Park Rapids was 7-8 and Breckenridge was 2-13.

On Tuesday night the Hornets dropped a heart breaker in double overtime to Park Rapids Area by a score of 82-80. The Hornets led by a score of 38-35 at halftime, before the two teams ended regulation tied at 71-71. Frazee led for just about the entire game,
before the Panthers tied the game late in the second half. The two teams finished the first overtime tied at 75-75, before the Panthers were able to hit just one more shot in the second overtime session to end Frazee’s season with a record of 11-14 and 3-13 in the conference.

Head coach Ryan Vigen said he felt the Hornets did a good job of moving the ball on the offensive end of the court, which led to some easy looks inside, but the game got away from them down the stretch.

Frazee shot the ball well and hit nearly 48 percent of their shots from the floor and dominated the Panthers in the paint with 42 points down low and came away with 47 rebounds. The Hornets had 28 assists on 33 made shots, while the Panthers held an advantage of the free throw line by a 17-7 margin.

Carter Sonnenberg had a solid night from the floor as he scored 36 points to go along with 15 rebounds, while Adam Vigen came just one assist shy of a triple-double as he scored 12 points, 10 rebounds and finished with nine assists.

Asher Blaine joined the pair in double figures with 12 points.

Ayden Grossman scored seven points, Noah Mekalson scored six points, Andrew Aho scored four points to go along with seven assists, while Dawson Lyman scored three points in the loss.
