Hornet sports fans will have a rooting interest in this year’s Class AA State Basketball Championship after Head Coach Scott Bergman’s top-seeded Sauk Centre Mainstreeters captured the Section 6AA title defeating No. 3 Milaca 60-37 at St. Cloud State University Friday, March 7.
Sauk Centre never trailed in the championship game and were victorious by at least 20 points in their three section games defeating Foley 68-48 and Annandale 72-43 to advance to the section final.
Bergman’s team was ranked No. 7 in AA at the conclusion of the regular season and improved to 27-2 overall. The Mainstreeters will take a 10-game winning streak into the state tournament. Sauk Centre returns to state for the first time since 2020 – the year the tournament was interrupted and then canceled by the pandemic.
Bergman led his team to the school’s first girls basketball state championship back in 2018 defeating the Roseau Rams and the talented sisterly duo of Kacie and Katie Borowicz 63-52.
Scott graduated from Frazee-Vergas High School in 1981 and was a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2013. He is also the Athletic Director at Sauk Centre.
The Mainstreeters (27-2) are seeded fourth and will face No. 5 Minnewaska Area (27-3) in the first round Wednesday, March 12, at Williams Arena, in Minneapolis.
