The fifth seeded Frazee Hornets came up just short in their bid to knock off fourth seeded Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in the quarterfinals of the sub section tournament on Thursday. The Hornets, who entered the game with a record of 11-14 due to a brutally difficult regular season schedule, tied the game early in the second half, but were never able to overtake the Comets as they fell by a score of 67-52.

The Hornets pulled within one point at 25-24 at halftime thanks to a three point play by Dawson Lyman as the clock was ticking down, while Adan Vigen hit a 3-pointer in the second half to tie the game at 27-27 before the Comets were able to take control of the game down the stretch.

“We battled last night.  Got down by 10 in the first half and got it to one on a big steal by Dawson Lyman with 4 seconds remaining in the half.  He made a three point play to cut it to one.  In the second half Adam hit a 3 from the corner to tie it at 27 but we could never take the lead,” said head coach Ryan Vigen.

The Hornets shot just 28.8 percent from the floor, but held a high-powered Comet offense to just 33.9 percent from the floor and just 5-22 shooting from the 3-point line. The big difference in the game at the free throw line as the Hornets shot an impressive 13-15 from the charity stripe, but the Comets went 22-27 from the free throw line to pull away for the win.

Despite the loss Vigen said he was pleased with how the Frazee team played throughout the game.

“Very proud of my boys.  They don’t have any quit in them and they are so fun to coach.  It was tough to see this season come to an end,” said Vigen.

The Hornets were led offensively by Asher Blaine who scored 12 points, while Carter Sonnenberg finished with a monster game with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Adam Vigen scored 10 points to go along with five rebounds, while Dawson Lyman scored eight points, Noah Mekalson scored five points, Andrew Aho scored four points and Ayden Grossman rounded out the scoring with two points.

The Hornets end their season with a record of 11-15 overall and finished the Heart ‘O Lakes Conference season with a record of 3-13.
