The lakes area now has a Scouts BSA program that is open to girls. Maggie Puetz was visiting a friend who owns a landscaping business in the lakes area when she saw a wall of merit badges. The Vergas resident, who is a former Girl Scout Brownie, thought the outdoor opportunities sounded like a great deal of fun for both sexes. She asked her friend about the program and learned that in 2017 the Boy Scouts organization changed its policy to allow girls to enter.
Starting Monday, the Frazee-Vergas School District began its distance learning program. The plan was created by administration and staff during the past two weeks, and will be tweaked as needed, said Superintendent Terry Karger. Currently, the at-home based learning began on March 30. The at-home learning is a state mandate to reduce the risk of spreading of the corona virus.
The Frazee City Council continued preparations to keep government running smoothly during the stay-at-home directive by Minnesota State Governor Tim Walz. While Waltz’s order was delivered Wednesday, stating the stay-at-home order went into effect at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 27 and goes through at least April 10, the council took early action at a special emergency meeting held Tuesday, March 24.

Tony Beck was one of about 20 Frazee firemen who fought a fire reported about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday on 40 acres of grassland and cornfield on the Bob Rethwisch property, four miles north of Highway 87 on County Road 31. Six rigs were taken to the fire. Fire Chief Tappe said the fire appeared to have started in the ditch and speculated it might have resulted from someone throwing out a lit cigarette. Burning restrictions will start Monday, April 3, in Otter Tail County and Friday, April 7 in Becker.
When people think of maple syrup, they usually think of the New England states, or possibly Quebec. Vergas, Minnesota, doesn’t immediately come to mind for most people. Yet Vergas has a distinctive position in maple syrup production statistics. It is the United States’ western-most area in which maple syrup is produced. And to commemorate the fact, there will be a Maple Syrup Fest Saturday in Vergas. It’s billed as the only such festival of its type in Minnesota.
Vergas won’t be celebrating its centennial until 2003, but it’s not too early to begin planning for it, said Memorabilia and Fund-Raising Subcommittee Chairman Jill Hoffman. “It’s going to come a lot faster than we think,” she said. A meeting of the Centennial Committee is set for 7 p.m., Monday, April 10, and more committee volunteers are needed, Hoffman stressed.

$300 stolen in Catholic Rectory break-in Sunday—Fr. Daniel Noah, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, said the break-in occurred sometime between 2:30 and 4 p.m. while he was visiting at the Perham Hospital and with other people. Whoever took the money entered the back porch which was not locked, broke a window pane near the door and was able to reach through and unlock the interior door from the inside. The lowly thief, or thieves, made their way to the rectory office and took the bags of money from the Sunday services collections. Nothing else appeared to be missing.
The Frazee Fire Dept. recently received a gift of $500 from Burlington Township. The money will go toward the purchase of a 4-wheel all-terrain three-quarter ton fire fighting truck. The firemen wish to express their thanks to the Burlington Town Board and residents for this contribution. Fire Chief Russ Vikesland says the firemen hope to be able to buy the new truck this summer.
