Lori Glander feels much stronger in her left arm after getting a tattoo in honor of her cousin Grantley Johnson. Johnson, the seven-year-old great grandson of Shirley Glander of Frazee, died Feb. 6 after battling AML Leukemia. “He got sick when he was around five, and after nine months was in remission, but a few months later he got sick again,” Glander said. “He was always an inspiration. He was so strong all the time and so full of life. His illness never got him down.”

Braylee Riewer recently returned from the Miss Minnesota Outstanding Teen Pageant and took home the Talent Award and Rookie Talent Award, along with $500 in scholarships. Learn more about the proposed “Frazee Event Center” at a festivity planned Thursday, April 6 from 5-8 p.m. at the White Pine Room. The Frazee Community Development Corporation will lay all its cards on the table regarding its plans for the new center, formerly referred to as the Frazee Community Center.

It’s important to start conditioning kids not to abuse alcohol and drugs at an early age, said Joe Dretsch. Elementary kids will pay more attention to teenagers than to adult counselors when hearing about the dangers of alcohol and drugs, said Erica Moss. Drestch and Mois are members of Frazee High School’s select 16-member Alcohol Decisions team. “It’s a cross-age teaching program where high school students teach fourth graders, with am emphasis on refusal skills,” explained advisor Brad Laabs.

Larry Quade was one of the Frazee Rescue Squad volunteers who worked at the group’s annual pancake-and-sausage fundraiser Sunday. Volunteers fed 355 people, and donations included up to $800 in matching funds by AAL branch #873.

A Frazee woman and her two small children escaped injury when her car was struck by an eastbound Burlington-Northern freight train at the Frazee downtown crossing about 1:45 p.m. on Saturday. Mrs. Burton Tappe and the children were able to get out of the car just seconds before it was hit by the train. Her car apparently skidded and stalled on the railroad crossing.

Any thoughts of an early spring were snuffed out this past week as the area has gripped with near blizzard conditions and sub-zero temperatures.

While this area didn’t receive the full force of the blizzard that hit many states last weekend, more snow and some high winds hit Becker County, closing some area schools and making road travel hazardous.

All this came after an earlier storm had dumped about 8 inches of snow here March 23 and 24.

The thermometer skidded to 14 below Monday night and for the most part temperatures ranged in the teens and lower 20s this past week. Some moderation has been forecasted by this coming weekend.
