When the weather finally decides to cooperate the Frazee Hornets will be heating up the track with an experienced line up and a number of section and state qualifiers leading the track team this season.

Lainey Jacobson clears the bar during the pole vault last season.

On the boys side the Hornets will be led by senior Carter Sonnenberg in the sprints, hurdles, high jump and triple jump; as well as a pair of juniors in Tyden Schaefer in the pole vault and Jonah Sharp in the distance events. Sophomore William Storburg will also compete in the sprints.

On the girls side, senior Lainey Jacobson will be busy on the track as she competes in the mid distance and pole vault, while juniors Lola Hoehne in the distance events, Brynn Larson in the sprints and high jumps, as well as Jayden Sonnenberg in the sprints and high jump will return for Frazee.

Other returning athletes include sophomores Aubree Bristlin in the sprints, Katie Courneya in the mid distance and throwing events and Bristol Larsen in the distance; as well as freshmen Aynslee Johannsen in the hurdles, springs and high jump and Madi Perrine in the distance events will lead the charge for Frazee.

As a whole, head coach Jim Jacobson said this year’s team has some of the highest participation numbers since before the Covid-19 pandemic five years ago.

“We have some good numbers this year, our highest since Covid, so we are excited about that. We also have some of our largest junior high numbers that I can remember,” said Jacobson.

In order to find success this season the Hornets will need to overcome the losses of state entrant and pole vault recorder holder Brady Crabtree, Brady Borah, Alex Helmers and Nathan Longfors on the boys side of the track, as well as state entrants and school record holders Hailey Selly and Elsie Ratz on the girls side.

The Hornets will look to turn to Ayden Grossman, Mason Mickelson, Ean Kilde and Sebastian Sonnenberg on the boys side to help to fill in those gaps.

Jacobson said the Hornets are hoping to once again have some qualifiers for the state meet and compete for a true team and sub section championship this season.

Among the favorites in the conference and section will once again be Pelican Rapids and Barnesville.
