Adam Sonnenberg has lost one friend to coronavirus and three more were hospitalized. The New York resident living in central Harlem believes he also had the novel virus that originated in China. The son of Bruce and Gail Sonnenberg of Vergas moved to New York City in 2008 and is currently the head bartender and part-time manager at a midtown Manhattan hotspot. “My friend, who was 69 years of age, passed away a week before the bars were shut down,” Sonnenberg said.

Through the windows of senior living facilities throughout the region, friends and families are letting loved ones know they are on their minds, in their hearts and dearly missed. Sara Jacobson and Laurie Hendrickx are two area residents who have joined their family to find new ways to communicate with loved ones. Jacobson, who resides in Frazee, shared her mother Judy (Schermerhorn) Splonskowski is under the care of Ecumen in Detroit Lakes.

The Vergas City Council discussed utility late fees and water shut-offs during the coronavirus pandemic. During a special meeting on Wednesday, April 1 that was held via teleconference, Vergas City Clerk Julie Lammers asked the council if it wanted to continue with city policy in regards to shutting off water services due to no payment, and if the council wanted to charge late fees during the shutdown.

Warm spring-like weather enabled Blake Jepson, 8, and Lucas Mickelson, 9, to do their math homework while sitting on the sidewalk in downtown Frazee. The weather has been fluctuating between winter and spring. Heavy sleet fell Sunday, some nearly pea-sized.

Loren R. Ingebretsen presented a poem written for Charlie Rew at last week’s annual meeting of the Becker County Township Association. Ingebretsen is first vice president of the Minnesota Association of Townships. New has been the chairman of the Becker County Township Association since 1971, and is leaving the Burlington Township Board after serving 48 years. When he was first township supervisor, in 1952, the other supervisors were Ed Trieglaff and Ralph Nelson. He thinks Louie Brune was the clerk, and the treasurer’s last name was Baker. He figures he has served with about 25 or 30 other board members, altogether. But non of them, he acknowledged, served nearly as long as he did.

Work is progressing well (despite adverse weather) on the new 34×54 ft. addition to the Frazee Golf Course clubhouse. The outside work was nearing completion when these photos were taken Saturday. It now appears the building will be ready for use when the golf course opens when the snow disappears (hopefully) late this month.
