The Frazee boys golfers had the privilege and the honor of hosting the first meet of the Heart O’ Lakes Conference season. It is a new look Heart O’ Lakes Conference with the additions of Park Rapids, Staples and Wadena-Deer Creek.

Head coach Jason Reierson said it was a chilly but good first match for the Hornets.  The team went back and forth all day in the third and fourth place out of the 10 teams participating.

In the end the Hornets slipped to fourth place by four strokes. Reierson said he was really pleased with how we came out for the first event in which we have not been outside much yet.

Ben Reierson led the way for the Hornets shooting an impressive 71. That tied him for first place on the day. Cayden Wallin had a solid first event shooting 83.  Brodie Mausbach, another freshman, was very effective 84.  It was the best he has posted in a varsity event in his career.  Adam Vigen was still knocking off the rust, shooting 92. Tyler Lindell shot 99 and Hunter Piekarski rounded out the Hornet team shooting 109 in his first varsity experience.

Staples-Motley ended up taking first place followed by Hawley and Perham.

The second event of the season was held in Walker at the Tianna Country Club. With a larger field of 13 teams and a few new faces the Hornets still did a nice job competing.  The weather was really very nice with a slight breeze and some warming sunshine.  The team again worked hard to stay in the top half.

Frazee ended up settling in the fifth position. The hosting Wolves ended up winning the day. They also ended up with the medalist on the day.

Ben Reierson again paced the Hornets shooting 76 (four over). He had a bunch of really strong shots with a sprinkling of good fortune spread in.

Cayden Wallin was in the second spot again for the Hornets shooting 87.  He was a bit inconsistent for the day, but still strung together enough shots to be a solid contributor.  Brodie Mausbach who had never played this course really did well.  He shot 90 following up on his strong showing in Frazee.

Adam Vigen had a crazy scorecard on the front nine with a birdie on the first and last hole of the round.  In between that his consistency still was an issue. When he thought he had it going all of a sudden a weird double would jump up.  He ended the round with a 91 which was an improvement from the first meet.

The Hornets brought a couple new faces with them for this meet. Shane Erickson, a junior that just joined golf this season came and gained some valuable experience and shot 139.  He was not used to playing 18 holes and admitted that he ran out of gas on the second nine. Rounding out the six was an eighth grader that earned a trip in a playoff to come along. He was playing on a bum leg and did an excellent job shooting 113. He also had never been on this course or competed at the varsity level.

Last week the Hornets headed to Breckinridge for their second HOL meet of the season.  It was a very nice day with very little wind. The guys came out strong and were tied for the lead after seven holes. By the end of the day the boys slipped to fourth place out of the 10 conference teams. Frazee shot 338 as a team.

Reierson said one of their goals is to get under that 330 team score number.

Individually Ben Reierson kept on a nice roll carding a 75 which was good enough for fourth place. Cayden Wallin ended up in 17th place shooting a 84. He would have liked to get rid of his three double bogeys and firm up his card.

Freshman Brodie Masbauch had a really nice day shooting an 86. He just ran out of gas on the last couple holes.  Adam Vigen was playing more like himself, but a couple of unfortunate holes in a row got him. He ended with a 93. Tyler Lindell had his best day at Breck shooting 94.

Rounding out the team was Hunter Piekarski, another freshman, who shot a 99. It has been a long time since the Hornets have had all six guys under 100, which Reierson said was encouraging.
