In the heart of Vergas, a beautiful new piece of art stands as a living testament to love, dedication, and community — honoring the late Lois Kingsbury, a beloved mother, volunteer, and friend to so many.
This memorial ended up being one of the final works created by well-known local artist Patrick Shannon, owner and designer of Forest Edge Gallery. Shannon’s lifelong partner and co-owner, Helena Johnson, and his protégé, Luke Fugere, assisted in creating this meaningful tribute for Rex Kingsbury in memory of his mother, Lois. Shannon, whose work has touched many across our region, poured his talent and care into this final piece. “Mom is smiling down,” Rex shared, knowing his mother’s warm spirit will continue to inspire all who see it. Rex expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the entire Vergas community, giving special recognition to the Community Club of Vergas and everyone who donated the beautiful flowers that fill the monument.

Lois Kingsbury, who passed at age 92, was known for her positivity, her love of flowers, and her deep commitment to family and community. Though macular degeneration left her 95% blind in her final decade, Lois never lost her youthful spirit. Even when she could hardly see or hear; often feeling “trapped in her own body,” her mind and heart remained vibrant — always looking out for others.
Kingsbury raised her family alongside her husband and always supported her children. Rex fondly remembers how his mother, “even though she wasn’t the best gardener, loved flowers and all their beauty.” Lois was happiest when she was surrounded by lakes, flowers, and loons. This beautiful memorial couldn’t have been placed in a more fitting location than beside the iconic loon at Loon Lake Park, overlooking Long Lake.
This was one of Patrick Shannon’s final pieces before he went to be with the Lord in April 2025, just a few short weeks before the memorial was installed at the park.
It is more than just art — it’s a reminder of the enduring impact one kind spirit can have on a community. As people sit and rest, surrounded by flowers, they’ll feel Kingsbury’s presence: always giving, always smiling down, and always rooted in the place she loved most.
These two beautiful, impactful souls will be forever remembered and honored for the countless ways they gave back and brought people together. We are deeply grateful to everyone whose involvement, support, and donations made this tribute possible — a testament to the lasting legacy Patrick and Lois leave in the hearts of our community.
