A man was shot after fleeing law enforcement on Wednesday, July 9, at the Frazee Rest Area, according to press releases by the Becker County and Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Offices.

The Becker County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a domestic assault in Becker County in the 200 block of Becker County Highway 21 at approximately 5:30 p.m.

The caller reported that the adult male suspect had entered a residence, physically assaulted the victim and stole a firearm. 

Becker County made contact with the suspect’s vehicle in the city of Detroit Lakes, but the suspect fled. The Detroit Lakes Police Department joined in the pursuit, later assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol and the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.

The pursuit extended into Otter Tail County where the suspect pulled into the Frazee Rest Stop. Officers made contact with the suspect and an officer involved shooting occurred. 

Officers rendered aid, the scene was secured and the suspect was transported to Essentia Health in Detroit Lakes and later transferred to Fargo Essentia where their condition is unknown. No officers were injured in the encounter and officers involved were wearing body-worn cameras

The incident is being investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
