Vergas resident Pat Prunty was a modest man. He never sought credit, even though he put in many hours helping his community. And, when he spoke, it was with purpose. Losing a pillar of the community on March 4 due to lung cancer was a dark day for Vergas. While the pain and loss is still apparent, the community will celebrate his life during the Looney Days parade on Sunday, Aug. 9.

Each school district in Minnesota will decide if there will be learning in the classrooms come fall, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “One thing we know is the first day of school will not be like any we have seen,” said Gov. Tim Walz during the Thursday, July 30 press conference. In Frazee, school is set to start on Tuesday, Sept. 8, whether it will be the traditional in classroom learning or another format, has yet to be determined.

More than 20 riders participated in a motorcycle ride and games on Saturday as part of the Frazee-Vergas VFW Celebration Day. As part of the event, bikers were able to ride though an obstacle course on Main Street.

Frazee’s new world’s largest turkey statue was dedicated to the late Marvin Mickelson at a special ceremony on Saturday with about 100 people attending. Accepting the plaque were the following Mickelson’s: Ross, Christy, Beau, wife Hazel, Heath, Becky, Kelli and Wayne. Marvin was instrumental in spearheading the project to bring the world’s largest turkey to Frazee and spent much time and energy promoting Frazee.

Rodney Hanson will be the grand marshal of the Vergas Looney Days Parade on Aug. 13. He was selected from several nominations by the Looney Days Parade Committee, consisting of Greg Dahlgren, Brad Helmeke and Sherri Hanson.

  All five of this year’s candidates for the title of Miss Wolf Lake are Frazee High School students. Most years, candidates for the title represent several different schools. Pageant Chairman Bess Brambrink said she thinks there is more interest in the pageant at FHS this year because the current Miss Wolf Lake, Michelle Quade, is also a FHS student.

Ann Daggett, 1975 Miss Frazee, was honored with the Miss Frazee pageant runner-ups. Roxane Feldt, 2nd runner-up, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Feldt; Queen Ann Daggett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Daggett, and Dorothy Nistler, 1st runner-up, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Nistler, all of Frazee.

A young Detroit Lakes man drowned Tuesday night, July 29 in Buffalo Lake about 12 miles north of the city. The victim was C. Richard Chase, Rt. 3, Frazee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Chase, a 1975 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School. His body was recovered early Wednesday morning from about eight feet of water. Chase was considered to be a very good swimmer.

A fire that destroyed South Shores resort on Big Toad Lake on July 24 has been blamed to faulty electrical wiring. Minnesota Deputy Fire Marshall C. C. Tallman of Detroit Lakes investigated the ruins and said the fire started near a junction box in the ceiling in the bar area of the dance hall. Tallman said a wall socket was apparently overloaded.
