The Minnesota Housing board of directors recently approved more than $123 million in rental assistance for low-income families throughout Minnesota. Fifty local, regional and Tribal administrators will receive two-year grants to provide direct assistance to eligible families.
Bring It Home Rental Assistance was one of several programs created during the 2023 legislative session to address affordable housing in the state. Ongoing funding comes from a combination of state appropriations and a portion of a new Twin Cities metropolitan area sales tax.
“Bring It Home is one of the 2023 legislature’s landmark investments in affordable housing,” said Jennifer Ho, commissioner of Minnesota Housing. “This rental assistance will help thousands of Minnesotans afford their rent as costs continue to rise.”
The grant recipients, which include housing authorities, Tribal entities and nonprofits, will be able to administer Bring It Home funds using the same systems as their established federal rental assistance programs. The funding is expected to help ensure stable housing for approximately 5,000 families across the state.
Households may earn up to half of the area median income (AMI) to be eligible for rental assistance. Priority will be given to households with children 18 and under and annual incomes at or below 30% of AMI. Bring It Home offers more flexibility than federal rental assistance by allowing renters who pay a little above the average rent in their area to be eligible. Doing so will help more renters in tight rental markets.
Grantees applied via a competitive request for proposals process. The board of directors approved the grants during a July 24, 2025, meeting.
