The Pioneer Fest is considering moving from Perham to Vergas. During its monthly city council meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 8, Vergas City Clerk Julie Lammers said a request came to the city to allow the usage of city property along West Lake Street for the annual event. The city of Vergas purchased 19.9 acres at 310 West Lake Street for $33,290 at a land auction in September 2017 and have used the parcel for city storage. The Pioneer Festival has traditionally taken place the third weekend in August and focuses on celebrating early settlers of the area by showcasing folk art with demonstrations, re-enactments, concerts and more.

Sidewalks on East Main Avenue were poured last week and are now usable. Other sidewalks along Lake Street from the railroad tracks to Ash Avenue were being poured Tuesday. A layer of gravel should be added to Main Avenue this week to make the street more user friendly and the accesses to store parking lots.

The bad news is Frazee-Vergas School enrollment is down. That was expected. The good news is it’s not down nearly as much as expected. Enrollment figures were reviewed by the Frazee School Board at its Monday meeting. At the start of school the student count was 1,226, compared with 1,228 in May.

Albert Wilprecht signed his name to begin the voting procedure in the primary election Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Frazee Fire Hall. Assisting him was Joyce Wothe, while LaVern Holmer handed out “I voted” stickers and reminded everyone to use one side of the ballot.

Jerry Sandau placed second in the State FFA Tractor Driving Contest at the Minnesota State Fair on August 28. The contest consisted of four classes: the tractor safety written test, maintenance and safety of tractor, two wheel obstacle course and the four wheel backup course. Sandau is a member of the Frazee High School FFA Chapter.

A former Frazee High School graduate, Larry Mullins, has been named one of the Outstanding Young Men of America by the Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Men of American Awards Program. The program is spooned by leading men’s civic and service organizations throughout the nation.

A 19-year-old Detroit Lakes man was killed about 9:15 a.m. Friday in a car-train accident at the Becker County Road 116 crossing one mile east of Detroit Lakes. The victim was identified as Douglas LeRoy Kertscher, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kertscher of rural Detroit Lakes. Kertscher’s car was southbound when struck by a Burlington Northern coal train which was eastbound. The train continued a half mile down the track before it could be stopped.
