In a match up between a pair of unbeaten teams, Friday’s game between the Frazee Hornets and Breckenridge Cowboys was neck-and-neck for the opening three quarters of the game. Unfortunately, 21 points in the fourth quarter alone for Breckenridge lifted the Cowboys to a 42-18 win over the Hornets on Friday night.

Head coach Russ Hackel said the final score may not show it, but the game was back and forth for the opening three quarters of action. The big difference in the game came from a few big plays in the fourth quarter that made the final score 42-18.

“The second half they came back and scored and we used up the whole third quarter with one drive. To that point we right in it,” he said. “They are definitely a good team. They are going to cause a lot of teams problems.”

Breckenridge opened the game with a touchdown and extra point in both the first and second quarters, while the Hornets scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to leave the game at 14-12 at halftime. Both teams scored a touchdown in the third quarter with Breckenridge converting the extra point and the Hornets failing on their attempt to leave the score at 21-18 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys found the end zone three times in the final quarter to improve to 3-0 on the season and hand Frazee its first loss of the season.

Offensively, Adam Vigen had a solid night through the air as he went 9-15 for 183 yards and a touchdown passing.

Ayden Grossman caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdown, while Ben Reierson caught three passes for 38 yards and Dawson Lyman caught one pass for 19 yards.

Mason Mickelson had a solid game both on the ground and through the air as he caught two passes for 73 yards and rushed 13 times for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground

“Mason had a good game. He stepped up definitely,” said Hackel.

Lyman rushed six times for 31 yards, Reierson rushed five times for seven yards, Vigen rushed two times for five yards, Hunter Malone rushed one time for three yards,
Reed Simon rushed one time for two yards and Christian Peichel rushed one time for one yard.

In all, the Hornets finished with 338 yards of total offense.

Defensively, the Hornets were led by Vigen with five solo and four assist tackles, while Blake Sonnenberg finished with one solo and eight assists, Noah Mekalson finished with one solo and six assists, Conner Erickson finished with two solo and five assists to go along with 1 1/2 sacks. Also picking up sacks was Jack Graham with one sack and Reierson who finished with three assists and half a sack.

This week the Hornets will host New York Mills in a pink out game. The Eagles are 0-3 on the season after falling to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 18-12, Otter Tail Central 22-14 and Parkers Prairie 14-6.

The Eagles currently average 10.7 points per game on offense and give up 18 points per game on defense.

”I think they have done a good job. They run the ball too and throw the ball a bit more,” said Hackel of NY Mills. “They have some kids who are good athletes so we have to be sound.”

Frazee averages 28 points per game on offense, while giving up 16 points per game on defense.

As far as Frazee, Hackel said the Hornets are hoping to expand their offense a bit more as they look to put themselves in a good position to score each week.

“Offensively we want to start expanding our offense a bit with our formations…and what we are trying to do,” he said.
